About the City
History
The Tequesta Indians first settled the lands that would become Fort Lauderdale. When Spanish explorers entered the area, they brought smallpox and other diseases with them and the tribe dwindled and eventually fled to Cuba after the Seven Years’ War. Forts went up and small populations started making the area their home. It was in 1920 that the area started to see measurable growth.
During WWII, Fort Lauderdale became a military base. When the war ended, military members moved back or remained in the area and brought their families with them. Over time, it would become a popular yachting center and home to some of the world’s largest cruise ships.
Flights in and out of Fort Lauderdale are handled by the international airport. There is also train service through Amtrak. The airport has car rental desks in the car rental center adjacent to Terminal

Once you’re in the city Broward County Transit operates the public bus, and Tri-Rail operates community rail service. These are both affordable means of transportation when you’re in the city. If you’re near the river and canals, there are water taxis available to bring you to the different areas of town. The system is easy to use. Inbound taxis go to New River, downtown, and to Las Olas. Outbound taxis go from New River to the Galleria Mall. There’s also the Hollywood Route that goes to Hollywood Beach. You can purchase your ticket once you board with either cash or a major credit card.
Otherwise, you can also rely on taxi service to get you to your destination. Taxis can hold up to five people. It’s a pricier option, but the best choice if you’re in a hurry.

Weather in Fort Lauderdale is pretty similar to what you’d find in the tropics. Summers are the wetter season and average temperatures reach into the 90s with lows rarely going below 70. Humidity is probable, though the ocean breezes offer some respite from the heat. Winters are mild with average highs in the upper-70s and lows dropped to the 60s. It’s very rare to experience a frost in this area. If you’re traveling in the winter, you may want a light jacket for nights on the beaches, but otherwise, you’ll be dressing in light clothing.

The city is home to an annual Pridefest every March. This festival offers a range of activities, and it’s a great place to meet people, enjoy the city’s culture, and sample foods and beverages from more than 150 vendors who are all LGBT-friendly. There’s a parade, a comedy show, and live music too.
Beaches
There are eight beaches in Fort Lauderdale that tourists are welcome to visit. Rules are pretty easy to follow, take out what you brought in, watch for riptides and storms, and don’t walk on the dunes.
Dania Beach is considered by many to be the area’s hidden gem. It rarely sees heavy crowds. There’s a fishing pier and plenty of seafood restaurants.
Deerfield Beach is in the northern part of the city. It has quiet coves, making it a popular choice for waterskiing. At Deerfield Beach, the lifeguards require you to stay to the supervised areas and to stay within 50 yards of the shore. Surfing is only allowed on the north side of the pier.
Fort Lauderdale Beach is the most popular beach in Fort Lauderdale, and is monitored by Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue. Lifeguards are on-duty daily in 20 stations along the beach. Entertainment and Performing Arts
Broward Center for the Performing Arts features more than music concerts, it’s also home to Broadway shows, children’s entertainment, and ballet. There’s a lounge within the center where you can sit in comfort while watching the performance from the lounge. Grab a bite to eat in the on-site cafe.
Las Olas Boulevard is a shopping and entertainment district in Fort Lauderdale. There are restaurants with both indoor and outdoor seating, chain stores and boutiques, bars, and nightclubs. You’ll also find hotels and spas.
Fort Lauderdale has several museums where you can learn something new. Bonnet House Museum and Gardens is a historic home sitting on 35 acres with beautiful gardens and historic furnishings and art. The Antique Car Museum has a private collection of 40 classic 1909 to 1940 Packards. Tours are offered from Monday to Saturday. The Museum of Art has many art displays that range from Ancient Egypt to current artists. Museum of Discovery and Science has an IMAX theater and hands-on exhibits for all ages. My Jewish Discover Place is a children’s museum that presents Jewish culture in an environment that allows youngsters to freely touch the exhibits. Finally, Stranahan House is the historic home of the founder of Fort Lauderdale and features period furnishings and art.
Parker Playhouse is a historic theater where you can catch a ballet, comedy performance, concert, or theatrical production. Shows run throughout the year, so check the schedule to see if anything appeals to you.
Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment District spans a number of streets on both sides of the river. There are many restaurants and shops in this area, but it’s also home to art galleries, museums, and entertainment venues. It’s the place to go for live music and dancing.
Famous Landmarks
At Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, you can walk on the Coastal Hammock Nature Trail, bike, camp, canoe/kayak, fish, swim, or enjoy a picnic. The nature trail does have a free audio tour available through your cell phone. Fishing doesn’t require a boat as you sit or stand on the seawall and see what you can catch.
International Swimming Hall of Fame is both a museum and hall of fame for world-class swimmers. You’ll see memorabilia for many Olympic swimmers, and have access to books about the sport and professionals involved in swimming. There’s also a water complex between the hall of fame buildings that has two pools, a swimming flume, and a diving well.
Shopping and Dining Out
Another popular spot for bargains, Festival Flea Market has more than 500 retailers and is open year round, even on major holidays. You’ll find bargains on beauty products, books, clothing, furniture, shoes, and more. There’s even a farmers’ market if you’re looking for specialty foods and produce.
Before visiting The Galleria, visit their website and print out the welcome card. When you present that card to Guest Services, they’ll give you a coupon book full of coupons. There’s also a drive-in movie theater that’s open seven days a week.
Urban Market takes place every Saturday in the historic district. Not only will you find exotic and heirloom produce, but you’ll also find homemade soaps, fresh seafood, holistic products, and flowers. There are bargains to be found, but most consider the international food vendors and bakers to be the real treat.

The easiest way to find affordable lodging is by checking out the vast supply of hotels and motels throughout Fort Lauderdale. There are dozens of options that line the ocean or are spread out through the inland neighborhoods. You’ll find the largest selection near Lauderdale Beach and Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. There are also plenty of hotels and motels right off the I-95, near the Lauderdale Harbours, and close to
Fort Lauderdale International Airport.
Fort Lauderdale hosts a number of affordable guest homes and inns, B&Bs are harder to come by. Some are clothing optional or specifically for the gay and lesbian crowd, so make sure you’re aware of those policies before you make a reservation. While bed and breakfasts generally include breakfast in your room rate, inns may not. Always ask to see if there is a charge for the full or continental breakfast.
For really cheap hotel rates in Fort Lauderdale, look into the area’s hostels. There are a few traditional hostels, and some motels that offer hostel lodging. A hostel is a little more primitive, usually with shared bathrooms, but you have a place to sleep without spending a lot of money. With a hostel, you stay in a dorm room, so you need to make sure you keep your personal items safe. Some hostels do offer private rooms, but expect to pay hotel rates for the private accommodations.
