If your accommodation preference is a comfortable family hotel, Florida offers you plenty from which to choose. One of the most exciting destinations in Florida to bring your family is Fort Lauderdale. With its fabulous beaches stretching along 23 miles of coast and its dazzling array of shops, Fort Lauderdale makes your decision to stay here, rather than Miami or Orlando, an easy one.

Sometimes maligned, and even ignored, because of its infamous reputation as a college spring break party town, those who chose to give Fort Lauderdale a wide berth are missing out on some of the very best Florida has to offer. From the renovated riverfront to the nearby Everglades, this Florida city can guarantee you a very rewarding holiday indeed.

Riverfront Revival

You wont find it too hard to find a river or oceanfront family hotel. Florida is renowned for this type of accommodation and Fort Lauderdale offers you several with magnificent views. Yet, the river front area of the city is more than hotels and luxurious homes; it is also a lively area for shopping, dining and drinking.

Formerly known as the Riverwalk, the Riverfront consists of two major streets - Las Olas Boulevard and Himmarshee Street. While Himmarshee Street boasts the exclusive Voodoo club and other fine establishments, Las Olas Boulevard is home to a variety of exclusive shops and boutiques. This beautifully landscaped boulevard features everything from fine chocolates at Kilwin's Chocolate and Ice Cream shop, to exquisite jewellery at Carroll's Jewellers. For high end, quality items you can consider the shops in the Galleria Mall. Among them you can find Neiman Marcus, Macy's, Dillard's and Coach. You can also wander off to view fine art at the Museum of Art, or shop for special items at the Sunday Gourmet Farmer's Market.

If the weather is right, arrange for a day's sailing off Las Olas Marketplace. A cruise on a yacht up or down the river is a wonderful way to view the delights of the city and can give you a different perspective of Fort Lauderdale.

A Day at the Beach

Need a reason to stay in an ocean view family hotel? Florida beaches, of course! What is a trip to Florida without a dip in the refreshing water of the Atlantic Ocean? Fort Lauderdale offers you several beautiful, sandy beaches on which to luxuriate. The water is a perfect temperature for diving right in, whether you come during the winter weather or during the city's hot and humid summer. All you need is as little clothing as possible, the lulling sound of the waves and a fresh ocean breeze to make your day on the beach complete.

Fort Lauderdale has several marvellous beaches to entice you. South Beach offers wonderful privacy, but you may prefer the busy stretch of Fort Lauderdale Beach or the freshwater lagoons and the narrow strip of oceanfront beach of Hugh Taylor Birch State Recreation Area. If you want to take a road trip before you lie in the sun, consider a visit to Hollywood Beach, with its charming boardwalk, or Dania Beach with its rollercoaster. Wherever you stay in a family hotel, Florida will make sure your visit is as eventful and pleasurable as you want it to be.

Stopover in style in one of these trendy airport hotels

Hilton Frankfurt Airport-After spending a night in one of these super-stylish hotels, you won't want to leave the airport...
Airport Hotels In Florida
Airport Hotels In Florida

Crowne Plaza Hotel, Changi airport, Singapore

Despite the fact that this hotel is located within Changi airport, it feels more like a luxurious jungle lodge, with courtyards filled with exotic plant life and a beautifully landscaped swimming pool. The bedrooms are stunning, with standalone bath tubs and rainfall showers, while the lobby is equally impressive. Highlights include the ultra modern furniture - the curvaceous sofas are apparently inspired by papayas and watermelons - which might sound slightly odd, but somehow it works.

Kempinski Hotel Airport, München, Germany

Kempinski Hotel Airport-Airport hotels often feel cramped, but that's certainly not the case with this next place, which is located just a few meters from Munich's main airport. Guests will find one of the largest hotel lobbies in the world: a glass and steel affair which covers 1400 square metres and includes a 17-metre long reception desk and 20 palm trees shipped over from America. This 389-room hotel also has another unique USP which will probably appeal mostly to football fans: every Sunday, Germany's most famous football talk show is broadcast from the hotel's atrium, transforming it into a fully working television studio.

Element Miami, Florida
Airport Hotels In Florida
Airport Hotels In Florida

Element Miami-If you’re craving exercise after a long haul flight, head to the Element Miami at Miami International Airport where electricity is generated by guests using the hotel's exercise bikes. Element Miami is certainly one of the more environmentally-friendly airport hotels - there are even electric vehicle charging stations. The hotel rooms and public spaces are filled with natural light and have been designed to feel like a home-from-home, with an outdoor 'backyard' area complete with fire pits and barbecues.

Hilton Frankfurt Airport, Germany

Hilton Frankfurt Airport-Airport hotels are notoriously noisy, and unless you're a plane-spotter, this isn't a good thing. At the Hilton Frankfurt Airport hotel however, every single window is sound-proofed. It's also ideally located and can be found within what's known as the Squaire, which has direct access from the airport and is home to Frankfurt's main rail station (you'll find 185 daily high-speed rail links across Europe), a medical centre, art installations and designer shops.

Fairmont Vancouver Airport, Canada

Fairmont Vancouver Airport-The Fairmont Vancouver Airport hotel feels about as far-removed from an airport hotel as it's possible to get, although the complimentary eye masks and sound-proofed windows will certainly appeal to weary travellers. The hotel's bar offers guests spectacular views of the runways and plane-spotters will love the in-room telescopes, but if you've had your fill of air travel, the spa offers over 130 treatments designed to revive and refresh. There's also BMW bikes available to hire and for guests returning from fishing trips, there's even a 'fish valet' who will freeze your catch.

Yotel London Gatwick, London

Yotel London Gatwick-If you don’t mind small spaces, Gatwick’s Yotel - the brainchild of the people behind Yo! Sushi - might just be the answer to your stopover prayers. Granted, there’s no swimming pool, spa or swanky restaurant. Instead, the 47 pods, which can be rented by the hour, house a bed, foldout desk, small bathroom and flat-screen TV. Food can be ordered from the bar and delivered to your pod, although considering the Yo! Sushi link, we can't help but think a conveyer belt would be more appropriate.

Sofitel London Heathrow, London

Sofitel London Heathrow-Sofitel London Heathrow was recently named one of the world’s best airports by those behind the World Airport Awards (yes, there really is such a thing), thanks largely to its easy access (via a covered walkway from T5) and impressive facilities – there are 45 meeting rooms, two restaurants, a tea salon and a hairdressers for those looking to fight the frizz caused by long haul flights. State-of-the-art rooms and added extras such as Swarovski crystal fixtures makes this hotel feel a million miles away from your typical airport hotel.

Custom Hotel, Los Angeles

Custom Hotel-The Custom Hotel is a five-minute drive from LAX and a ten minute drive from Santa Monica and Venice beach. It's one of the more hi-tech hotels, with an entire area dedicated entirely to social messaging and an 'Admiral's Club' gaming area. It's also a hotel which doesn't take itself too seriously - the staff wear Pan-Am inspired uniforms and huge murals of galloping race horses dot the walls of the lime-green gym.

Sheraton Milan Malpensa Airport, Italy

Sheraton Milan Malpensa Airport-It takes just two minutes to walk from Milan Malpensa airport's terminal one to this colourful hotel, where you'll find huge flat screen televisions, bed linen made from the finest cotton and the Sheraton's famous Sweet Sleeper beds, just to give you a little head start on your journey to the land of nod. There's also a 1000 square foot spa and a fitness centre with an indoor pool. Unsurprisingly for an Italian creation, it's one of the more beautiful airport hotels. Highlights include the six-metre high glass wine cellar which can be found in the onsite Il Canneto Restaurant.

Citizen M, Schiphol airport, Amsterdam

Citizen M-Citizen M Hotel is located right outside Amsterdam's Schiphol airport and has a fun, trendy vibe. The check-in process is automated and all rooms have hi-tech, touch screen 'mood pads' from which allow guests to tweak everything from the lighting and temperature to wake-up call times. Unusually for an airport hotel, Citizen M feels more like a cosy crash pad, with a lobby filled with squashy sofas, overflowing bookshelves and Mac computers which guests can borrow free of charge.

About the City

History
The Tequesta Indians first settled the lands that would become Fort Lauderdale. When Spanish explorers entered the area, they brought smallpox and other diseases with them and the tribe dwindled and eventually fled to Cuba after the Seven Years’ War. Forts went up and small populations started making the area their home. It was in 1920 that the area started to see measurable growth.

During WWII, Fort Lauderdale became a military base. When the war ended, military members moved back or remained in the area and brought their families with them. Over time, it would become a popular yachting center and home to some of the world’s largest cruise ships.

Flights in and out of Fort Lauderdale are handled by the international airport. There is also train service through Amtrak. The airport has car rental desks in the car rental center adjacent to Terminal Cheap hotels near Fort Lauderdale Airport are located close by off State road.

Once you’re in the city Broward County Transit operates the public bus, and Tri-Rail operates community rail service. These are both affordable means of transportation when you’re in the city. One of the more unusual options are the pedicabs/rickshaws, that are a bicycle attached to a cab for up to two passengers.
If you’re near the river and canals, there are water taxis available to bring you to the different areas of town. The system is easy to use. Inbound taxis go to New River, downtown, and to Las Olas. Outbound taxis go from New River to the Galleria Mall. There’s also the Hollywood Route that goes to Hollywood Beach. You can purchase your ticket once you board with either cash or a major credit card.
Otherwise, you can also rely on taxi service to get you to your destination. Taxis can hold up to five people. It’s a pricier option, but the best choice if you’re in a hurry.

Weather

It’s very rare to experience a frost in this area. If you’re traveling in the winter, you may want a light jacket for nights on the beaches, but otherwise, you’ll be dressing in light clothing.

Beaches
Hampton Inn Airport Hotels
Hampton Inn Airport Hotels

There are eight beaches in Fort Lauderdale that tourists are welcome to visit. Rules are  pretty easy to follow, take out what you brought in, watch for riptides and storms, and don’t walk on the dunes.
Dania Beach is considered by many to be the area’s hidden gem. It rarely sees heavy crowds. There’s a fishing pier and plenty of seafood restaurants.

Deerfield Beach is in the northern part of the city. It has quiet coves, making it a popular choice for waterskiing. At Deerfield Beach, the lifeguards require you to stay to the supervised areas and to stay within 50 yards of the shore. Surfing is only allowed on the north side of the pier.
Fort Lauderdale Beach is the most popular beach in Fort Lauderdale, and is monitored by Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue. Lifeguards are on-duty daily in 20 stations along the beach. During peak season, an additional 10 stands are used. Pay attention to the flags. Green means the ocean is calm, yellow means there are moderate currents, red means there are strong currents, double red means the beach is closed, and purple means there are creatures like jellyfish in the waters.  Great vacation spots are available in hotels near Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Hallandale Beach is at the southern end of Fort Lauderdale. It’s the best beach for water sports and golf. Boating is popular at this beach, and there’s also a casino and thoroughbred race track close by.
Hillsboro Beach is quieter and overlooks the Hillsboro Lighthouse. The beach is home to the Barefoot Mailman statue and is popular with nesting sea turtles, so respect them when they’re around.
Hollywood Beach has a 2.5-mile boardwalk that’s meant for both walkers and bicyclists. There are cafes along the boardwalk. For tourists who bring their dog with them, this beach does have a pet-friendly section.
Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is a 1/2 mile stretch that’s surrounded by a quiet beach village. There’s a coral reef that’s accessible for snorkelers and divers.

Pompano Beach is the popular option for fishing and hosts the annual Seafood Festival. The water at this beach is usually some of the warmest in the area because the Gulf Stream bends in closer to shore.

Entertainment and Performing Arts

Broward Center for the Performing Arts features more than music concerts, it’s also home to Broadway shows, children’s entertainment, and ballet. There’s a lounge within the center where you can sit in comfort while watching the performance from the lounge. Grab a bite to eat in the on-site cafe.
Las Olas Boulevard is a shopping and entertainment district in Fort Lauderdale. There are restaurants with both indoor and outdoor seating, chain stores and boutiques, bars, and nightclubs. You’ll also find hotels and spas.

Fort Lauderdale has several museums where you can learn something new. Bonnet House Museum and Gardens is a historic home sitting on 35 acres with beautiful gardens and historic furnishings and art. The Antique Car Museum has a private collection of 40 classic 1909 to 1940 Packards. Tours are offered from Monday to Saturday. The Museum of Art has many art displays that range from Ancient Egypt to current artists. Museum of Discovery and Science has an IMAX theater and hands-on exhibits for all ages. My Jewish Discover Place is a children’s museum that presents Jewish culture in an environment that allows youngsters to freely touch the exhibits. Finally, Stranahan House is the historic home of the founder of Fort Lauderdale and features period furnishings and art.

Parker Playhouse is a historic theater where you can catch a ballet, comedy performance, concert, or theatrical production. Shows run throughout the year, so check the schedule to see if anything appeals to you.

Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment District spans a number of streets on both sides of the river. There are many restaurants and shops in this area, but it’s also home to art galleries, museums, and entertainment venues. It’s the place to go for live music and dancing.

Famous Landmarks
At Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, you can walk on the Coastal Hammock Nature Trail, bike, camp, canoe/kayak, fish, swim, or enjoy a picnic. The nature trail does have a free audio tour available through your cell phone. Fishing doesn’t require a boat as you sit or stand on the seawall and see what you can catch.

International Swimming Hall of Fame is both a museum and hall of fame for world-class swimmers. You’ll see memorabilia for many Olympic swimmers, and have access to books about the sport and professionals involved in swimming. There’s also a water complex between the hall of fame buildings that has two pools, a swimming flume, and a diving well.

Shopping and Dining Out
Another popular spot for bargains, Festival Flea Market has more than 500 retailers and is open year round, even on major holidays. You’ll find bargains on beauty products, books, clothing, furniture, shoes, and more. There’s even a farmers’ market if you’re looking for specialty foods and produce.
Before visiting The Galleria, visit their website and print out the welcome card. When you present that card to Guest Services, they’ll give you a coupon book full of coupons. The mall has dozens of restaurants, all take your name if you want to shop and then dine without having to wait for a table. There are dozens of stores, three anchors, and banks.

Gallery at Beach Place does offer shopping, but there’s much more to this establishment. There are dozens of stores and restaurants, but you can also catch live shows, enjoy a manicure, or sign up for a tour of Fort Lauderdale.

There are more than 2,000 vendors selling used goods and antiques. It’s a giant flea market that takes hours to work your way through. There’s also a drive-in movie theater that’s open seven days a week.
Urban Market takes place every Saturday in the historic district. Not only will you find exotic and heirloom produce, but you’ll also find homemade soaps, fresh seafood, holistic products, and flowers. There are bargains to be found, but most consider the international food vendors and bakers to be the real treat.

Lodging
The easiest way to find affordable lodging is by checking out the vast supply of hotels and motels throughout Fort Lauderdale. There are dozens of options that line the ocean or are spread out through the inland neighborhoods. You’ll find the largest selection near Lauderdale Beach and Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. There are also plenty of hotels and motels right off the I-95, near the Lauderdale Harbours, and close to Fort Lauderdale International Airport.

Fort Lauderdale hosts a number of affordable guest homes and inns, B&Bs are harder to come by. Some are clothing optional or specifically for the gay and lesbian crowd, so make sure you’re aware of those policies before you make a reservation. While bed and breakfasts generally include breakfast in your room rate, inns may not. Always ask to see if there is a charge for the full or continental breakfast.

For really cheap hotel rates in Fort Lauderdale, look into the area’s hostels. There are a few traditional hostels, and some motels that offer hostel lodging. A hostel is a little more primitive, usually with shared bathrooms, but you have a place to sleep without spending a lot of money. With a hostel, you stay in a dorm room, so you need to make sure you keep your personal items safe. Some hostels do offer private rooms, but expect to pay hotel rates for the private accommodations.

The growth in pet friendly hotel rooms has exploded, and if you’ve got cheap tickets booked and you’re visiting Fort Lauderdale, here are a few places to consider that are whisker and paw friendly.

Il Lugano Suite Hotel

Voted as one of the best in the world by Conde Nast Traveler, this hotel is a splurge indeed, but in the best sense. It is three blocks from the beautiful beaches of Fort Lauderdale, and offers private yachts and a chauffeured excursion in one of the properties’ luxurious Cadillac Escalades. The Ritz-Carlton

Located just a few steps away from the beautiful beaches, the Ritz is a brand name whose standards pretty much go without saying.
