Smoke Free
Smoke-filled clothes, tobacco-stained fingers, ashtray breath? Tired of being sent off to separate smoking areas, away from the general public, to feed your habit? Societal trends are increasingly driving smokers to the margins of society. Fact is: smoking is no longer socially acceptable. And it is just plain uncomfortable to stand out in the cold or to sit in a room reeking of smoke. In hotels, where smokers and non-smokers regularly meet, this can occasionally lead to tensions between guests.

When it becomes more difficult to smoke, more and more people decide to say farewell to the hazy mist of a cigarette. Okay, so good intentions are quickly made – but how to put your resolution into action? Nicotine releases the “feel good” hormone dopamine into your brain. Your body then begins to crave these additional feelings of pleasure on a regular basis throughout the day – no matter what. When talking about smoking cessation, it’s important to distinguish between physical and psychological withdrawal. Just don’t smoke for 3-4 days – and don’t reach for those nicotine substitutes either – and you’ll have the physical part behind you. That may sound easier said than done, but it’s true. The hardest part is to break the negative habits and behavioural patterns. So how to stop? Nicotine substitutes are available as pastilles, inhalators, chewing gum, patches, vapour cigarettes or medication, and their use is supposed to help relieve the craving for a cigarette. In-patient treatment and group therapy also hold the promise of success. Unfortunately, nicotine substitutes also extend the addiction to nicotine. Not exactly perfect either.

A promising new method is one developed by health psychologist Dr. Ursula Grohs of Graz: psychodynamic model training (PDM®). The method has already been awarded the highest recommendation “A” of the World Health Organization (WHO). PDM® teaches you how to trigger the psychological stimuli which normalise your internal mood and keep your weight stable, with smoking cessation as a pleasant side effect. The model is based on one-day seminars and works exclusively with positive images.
