Uniland Development Co. tried to focus attention Thursday evening on the hotel, retail and commercial highlights of its proposed new $80 million mixed-use project on Delaware Avenue, but it was the attached five-level parking ramp that took center stage among neighbors at a community meeting. In comments following Uniland’s presentation, community members overwhelmingly cited safety concerns about the 520-space parking garage, which would occupy the rear half of the Delaware Court property on Elmwood Avenue and Chippewa Street. Residents of nearby buildings and the neighborhood warned of the potential for crime and vagrancy around the garage, citing its openness and the lack of any business activity that would draw people. They suggested taking steps to make the parking facility more attractive, safer and pedestrian-friendly, including by pulling the edge of the garage back and extending retail space in front of it on Chippewa.

Some also criticized what they said would be a likely diminishment of the quality of life stemming from heavier car and truck traffic on Chippewa Street and Elmwood Avenue, which also could put pedestrians and bicyclists at risk. And they cited significantly more noise and congestion from the massive building’s new loading dock on Chippewa. Instead, they suggested alternatives such as putting several parking levels underground or seeking to reduce the scope of the garage by encouraging more use of public transit. “I don’t see how you’ll get a parking ramp to be more attractive,” said Giles Kavanagh, who owns several properties in the area. “You have a chance here to set a real precedent.” By contrast, most of the rest of the 12-story project received hardly any focus from the crowd of more than 70 people in a second-floor meeting room at Uniland’s Avant Building, just down the street from the development site at 250 Delaware.

Michael Montante, the Uniland vice president who led the 90-minute meeting, responded that the company would try to listen to all of the concerns and see if it could incorporate those suggestions into its plans for the parking ramp, which are not yet complete. “We want to take your concerns into consideration,” he said. “We will do a good job.” He noted that there will be on-site security monitoring the ramp, but Uniland also can look at lighting. “Your concern is our concern,” he told one woman. But the concept of putting more parking underground – there will already be one level of underground parking – would likely prove far more costly, Montante said. It’s also difficult to go too far underground because of the water table, he added, noting that the Avant has a 12-inch basement floor just to keep the water at bay. Uniland is proposing a 515,000-square-foot, glass-curtain development to replace the two-story Delaware Court Building at the corner of Delaware and Chippewa. Plans call for a 120-room branded hotel on the second through fifth floors, office space on the sixth through 12th floors, and a mixture of retailers, office and hotel lobbies, and an open garden area on the first floor.

The US 6th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected a bid by the former owner of the Grand Resort Hotel and Convention Center in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., to reinstate a defamation lawsuit against the site TripAdvisor. Judge Karen Nelson Moore concluded for the court that the hotel's inclusion on the '2011 Dirtiest Hotels' list doesn't rise to the level of defamation because it is obvious the list simply communicates the opinions of TripAdvisor users. "First, TripAdvisor's use of 'dirtiest' amounts to rhetorical hyperbole," Moore wrote. "Second, the general tenor of the '2011 Dirtiest Hotels' list undermines any impression that TripAdvisor was seriously maintaining that Grand Resort is, in fact, the dirtiest hotel in America."

Then-hotel owner Kenneth M. Seaton sued Newton, Mass-based TripAdvisor in 2011. He accused the website of defamation and portraying his business in a way that would keep customers away. Judge Thomas W. Phillips in Knoxville rejected the claims in August 2012. Attempts to locate Seaton were unsuccessful Wednesday. The hotel shut down in late 2012 and was sold to a holding company. Alison Croyle, a spokeswoman for TripAdvisor, applauded the court's decision "as it continues to protect the opinions of consumers online". TripAdvisor, which bills itself as the world's largest travel site, aids people in gathering travel information, posting reviews and opinions of travel-related content and engaging in interactive travel forums. The site compiles best and worst lists and includes customer comments about featured places.

Such lists are common online - including compilations of the most trusted, most handsome and dumbest people - and a reasonable reader understands that placement on such a list is not a statement of fact, Moore wrote. For the '2011 Dirtiest Hotels' list, the Grand Resort was listed first among 10 entries. The accompanying comment from an unnamed guest said: "If you are looking for a hotel with chewing tobacco spit oozing down the halls and corridors; spiders actively making webs in every corner of your room; carpeting so greasy and dirty you wouldn't want to sit your luggage down - let alone walk around barefoot...... by all means, stay at The Grand Resort." Moore cited that comment and others on the list as proof that TripAdvisor wasn't using a scientific method to determine which hotels were actually the dirtiest in the country. "The quotations regarding other hotels on the '2011 Dirtiest Hotels' list confirm that the list cannot be reasonably understood as asserting that the hotels on the list are, in fact, the 10 dirtiest in America," Moore wrote.

An electric bus will be helping passengers get from DIA to hotels along nearby Tower Road starting Sept. 1.
The Ebus, as it's called, can go 155 miles on a single charge with only three to four hours of charging time. It'll be unveiled on Wednesday by a group of private and city leaders. The goal is to have an all-electric fleet over time picking up passengers from five hotels in that area. They'll start with the one electric for now. The hotels are calling this the "Airport Green District," and they've committed $3 million a year to run the bus fleet.

Aria Hotels, a specialist in authentic Greek hospitality in the country's lesser-known hideaways has added the Elatos Resort & Health Club to its collection of boutique hotels and villas. Elatos is a hidden gem just over two hours from Athens on Greece's Mount Parnassos offering quiet, relaxed skiing in winter and glorious hiking, mountain biking and other country pursuits all year round. In the coming months the hotel will undergo a number of improvements and upgrades which should be completed by December 2013. The Elatos resort which was built in 1996 comprises 39 classic chalets built using timber specially imported from Finland. Each is beautifully integrated into the landscape, typically nestling among fir trees. There are seven different types of chalet to choose from, accommodating between two and six people in two or three bedrooms, each ranging from 70 to 140 sq m. All chalets are equipped with a living room, fireplace and kitchen, one or two bathrooms and a veranda. Facilities include satellite TV, telephone, minibar and independently controlled heating.

In the central clubhouse is a restaurant, bar, health club and conference center. Aria Hotels will be introducing an all-new restaurant concept combining local cuisine with an innovative international touch. The health club provides a beautiful heated indoor swimming pool under a magnificent vaulted wooden ceiling, a sauna, Jacuzzi and fully equipped gym with a wide range of massage, health and beauty treatments available. For children there is babysitting and a mini club catering for every need, keeping younger members of the family busy, happy and safe. Elatos also caters for conferences, events and special occasions. The hotel's stylish conference centre has a meeting room that can be set up in various configurations for up to 80 people and offers all the necessary AV and office facilities for an efficient corporate event. For weddings and baptisms the resort has its own private church.

Commenting on the addition of Elatos to its collection of properties, Aria Hotels' Dafni Kosmidou stated: "Whether in winter or summer this resort offers a classic log cabin escape in the mountains for couples, groups of friends or families. It combines the thrill of being in your own self-contained adventure land with all the facilities of a hotel and health club on your doorstep. We think it is Greece's best-kept secret. The hotel's owning family has created a resort that is a beautiful expression of their passion for this unique region. We are proud to be adding this precious property to the Aria collection". At 2,260 metres Mount Parnassos is one of the highest mountains in Greece meaning a long skiing season with lasting snow coverage for on and off-piste skiing. It has two main skiing areas, Kellária and Fterólakka, and a small private ski center, Gerontovrachos, which is ideal for families with younger children who want to learn alpine skiing in a safe and secure environment.

Its rich biodiversity makes Mount Parnassos a fascinating retreat for lovers of nature and the outdoor life all year round. The resort is perfect for hiking, mountain biking, off road driving, horse riding and bird watching and for extreme sports enthusiasts there is sky diving. A number of monasteries in the region also make it popular for religious tourism. These include the 11th century Monastery of Osios Loukas, one of the most important Byzantine monuments in Greece, just 50 minutes away from the resort. Meanwhile the picturesque coastal town of Galaxidi with its crystal clear waters is only 45 minutes away. In nearby Arachova and Livadi there is plenty of nightlife with numerous lively bars and restaurants. The UNESCO World Heritage site of Delphi is just 30 minutes' drive from Elatos. It ranks among the most significant archaeological sites of the ancient world. It was home to the 'Delphic oracle', the most important oracle in the classical Greek world and was a major site for the worship of the god Apollo. Delphi was also the site of the Pythian Games, one of the precursors of the Modern Olympics.

Mike Tarantino dreams of a day in which paper tourism brochures are long gone. Instead, he hopes the information will be entirely online for customers. Tarantino, who owns Dennis Parasail & Jet Ski in East Dennis, Massachusetts, found a way recently to reduce the paper. He signed a contract with Concierge Connects, which sets up and provides iPads at area hotels with websites designed to give information on area restaurants, shopping options and other attractions. It also lists services such as post offices, dry cleaners and pharmacies. Tarantino’s business will be featured on the websites. iPads are placed at area hotels, letting customers flick through the options on the screen.

“It’s about time some people got rid of the little scraps of paper that hang out at concierge desks,” Tarantino said. Concierge Connects started three years ago, said Len Carmichael, a partner in the business. It first focused on hotels in Rhode Island and then started adding Cape locations in the fall of 2011. Carmichael declined to say how many resorts on the Cape have the iPad devices with his websites, but said some of the establishments include Cape Codder Resort in Hyannis, the Red Jacket Resort in South Yarmouth and Dan’l Webster Inn in Sandwich. Twenty-nine bed and breakfasts, motels and other lodgings have informational business cards with the company’s Cape-based website, ourguidetocapecodonline.com. The business also has a presence in the Boston area. It also provides informational cards at Boston hotels and other areas regarding Cape attractions. The business, which he co-owns, is developing sites for Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, Carmichael said. The website includes links to the websites of the various companies and other entities featured on his website, Carmichael said.

Tarantino said the link to his company’s website lets customers get more information than what’s available on brochures. Carmichael, who lives in Natick but also has a home in Eastham, previously created print guides for hotels with similar information. But he made the switch three years ago and started working on his current business. “I just saw the trend going forward with so many people using the Internet,” he said. “It just seemed like a natural trend to do this.” The company lists the attractions by towns and can do some adjustments to the website depending on the hotel location, he said. But next year, it hopes to organize the websites by region in the Cape. He also wants to make it possible for people to print information at the kiosks so they can take it on their travels.

Many hotels now using the service give guests cards with their room keys that list the website and QR codes, so they can scan it onto their smartphones. Kathi Rogers , the chef concierge at Chatham Bars Inn, said the hotel started using the service this spring. It took a while for staff to adapt, Rogers said, but the customers took to it right away. The hotel still hands out pamphlets, but Rogers recently got rid of the paper guides to area restaurants. The new system makes it easier for her and rest of the concierge staff to provide more up-to-date information on area restaurants, she said.

A man has been arrested for strangling a hotel maid until she passed out. According to an arrest affidavit from the Austin Police Department, Eric Robertson, 19, has been charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. Just after 9 a.m. on Aug. 21, a maid was cleaning rooms on the 7th floor of a hotel in the 300 block of East 4th Street. Police say she was inside a room cleaning when Robertson reportedly asked her to open a door to another room. She told him he would have to go to the front desk since she didn't have the authority to open rooms. The woman told police she thought Robertson had left the room and she went into the bathroom to replace towels. When she came out she saw someone move in the closet. That's when Robertson came out and grabbed the woman from behind.

The woman says she fought him off several times, but Robertson eventually pinned her to the floor and strangled her until she passed out. The woman woke up about 30 minutes later and went to the elevator where co-workers found her and called 911. Surveillance video at the hotel showed Robertson running through the hotel stairwell. He was found later at 9:30 p.m. and admitted to police that he was at the hotel in the morning and that he was the man in the surveillance video. He was placed under arrest. APD says the victim was taken to a local hospital with a fractured orbital bone (eye socket), two-inch laceration on her face, and swelling and abrasions on the side of her face. She was unable to open her left eye. She positively identified her attacker through a photo lineup, confirming that Robertson was the suspect. Robertson is currently being held on a $100,000 bond in jail with GPS and a curfew.

A 26-year-old man from Minneapolis has been charged with intentional second-degree murder for the shooting of a man at a Brooklyn Center hotel last week. According to the criminal complaint, officers arrived to the Super 8 Hotel around 3:30 a.m., on Aug. 22, 2013, to a report of a man bleeding and a possible shooting. Brooklyn Center police officers found the victim covered in blood, on the hotel entryway floor. The man, identified as 25-year-old Michael McGowan, of Minneapolis, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner reports McGowan died from a gunshot wound to the chest. A front desk clerk at the hotel reported hearing loud banging on multiple hotel doors, so he called police. Shortly after, the clerk found the victim on the ground. He called police again. Officers also interviewed the front desk clerk of the Days Inn, which was nearby. He told police he heard three to four gunshots in the parking lot. He also reported seeing five people run into a room at the Days Inn.

Officers were able to locate the occupants of the room. They were able to positively identify the shooting suspect as Antonio Daniels. Witnesses told police there was a fight and then Daniels fired a gun. Another witness arrived to the scene and said he heard yelling and gunshots near the Day’s Inn entrance. He also said he saw Daniels picking up shell casings near a hotel door at the Days Inn. The witnesses also identified Daniels from a photo line up. One of the witnesses said the victim called him earlier for a ride and said that people were “talking crazy" like they were trying to “rob” the victim, according to the complaint. Officers recovered a .22 caliber revolver behind a garbage can at the scene. Daniels remains in the Hennepin County Jail.

The water is fine for swimming in Mactan and the seafood is safe. That’s the message Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza and hotel and resort managers want to put across by jet-skiing over the weekend and having fish for lunch. They rode jet skis and ate fish served by the Crimson Resort where traces of oil sheen were reported last week right after the Aug. 16 collision of MV St. Thomas Aquinas and Sulpicio Siete Express.

“We are sending a message to all especially the foreign guests that fish bought in the city’s public market is safe,” Radaza said. Some hotels and resorts earlier advised guests to avoid swimming in the beach as staffers used old linens to catch traces of bunker oil in the Hilutongan channel. Radaza said the city government is on top of the situation and coordinated with all stakeholders in containing the oil spill. “Look at this (Crimson) resort, we see foreigners enjoying the water. There’s no more problem here about the water quality,” she said.

Youngki Lee, a representative of the Korean Travel Agency said the months of July and August are vacation time in South Korea which is why they didn’t have any cancellation of bookings to Cebu and Boracay. Imperial Palace Hotel’s General Manager Christopher Shim said most of their Korean guests continue to enjoy their water park with spacious pools. Crimson Resort manager Christopher Quadras said they found traces of oil sheen last week but were able to clean the beach area with improvised spill booms. “You no longer notice traces of oil slick at the beach. The water is very clear. It it is surely clean and safe,” he said.

High quality global journalism requires investment. Please share this article with others using the link below, do not cut & paste the article. Demand from Arab sovereign wealth funds has propped up merger and acquisition activity in the UK’s hotel sector this year, as oil money rushed to pick up prime London assets. In total just less than £2bn of deals were completed in the first half of 2013, compared with £500m in the same period last year, according to an analysis by Deloitte. Hotels in London accounted for some of the largest transactions in the sector, while Arab sovereign wealth funds accounted for the bulk of the deals. Constellation Hotels, which is part of a Qatar Holding investment vehicle, snapped up InterContinental Hotels Group’s hotel on Park Lane for £300m. It paid another £100m to the Crown Estate for the building’s freehold. Maryam Mohajer, senior manager in Deloitte’s travel, hospitality and leisure advisory team, said: “The pricing expectations required for London assets can only be met by sovereign wealth funds. It is one of the only gateway cities that has benefited from the downturn.”

Deals outside the capital made up most of the M&A activity over the first half. The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority bought 42 Marriott-operated hotels owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland for £640m in the period, while, in total, regions outside London made up 70 per cent of all deals during the period. The news is the latest sign that the hotel sector is recovering, after it was hit hard during the downturn following the financial crisis. The hotel industry was one of the frothiest sectors during the M&A bubble of the early-2000s, with a number of chains going on debt-fuelled acquisition binges. Since then, the sector has paid down some of the debt taken on, as it attempts to put itself on an even footing.

Ms Mohajer said that the gap between what sellers expected and what buyers bid had narrowed. “There’s more reality on the sellers’ part,” said Ms Mohajer. “Debt was too readily available in 2007, so buyers could do high multiples. That’s all changed, and sellers now know that.” Things in the sector have improved to such an extent that Hilton Worldwide is planning its return to public markets, after Blackstone bought the hotel chain at the peak of the bubble. The deal – worth $27bn in total – was one of the largest private equity buyouts ever.

Shanghai International Port (Group) Co. (600018) led a rally for companies based in the nation’s commercial hub on speculation a free-trade zone will spur trade and boost service industries including logistics and tourism. Shanghai Port, the operator of the city’s harbor, jumped 10 percent to 2.81 yuan at the 11:30 a.m. local-time break. Shanghai Jinjiang International Hotels Development Co. (600754), the nation’s largest hotel operator, surged 9.7 percent to 12.72 yuan. Shanghai Haibo Co., which provides taxi services, climbed 8.1 percent to 5.76 yuan.

The State Council approved a free-trade zone for Shanghai yesterday, according a statement posted on the website of the Ministry of Commerce yesterday. The free-trade zone will cover four bonded areas ranging from Waigaoqiao to the Pudong airport with a total area of 28.8 square kilometers, it said. “Construction of the free-trade zone will lure foreign companies and boost the number of overseas travelers entering the city,” Jiang Ya and Zhao Xueqin, analysts at Citic Securities Co., wrote in a report today. They recommended retail and tourism companies including China International Travel Service Corp. and Shanghai Friendship Group Co. The State Council has submitted to the legislature a proposal to alter some laws and administrative approvals regarding foreign investment, according to the commerce ministry statement.

The move “adapts to the new global trade trend and is a significant measure to adopt the more active opening-up strategy,” the statement said. “The main task is to explore new ways and models for China’s opening-up, accelerate the change of the government’s role, promote the transformation of economic growth and optimize the structure of the economy.” The government may start a trial of yuan convertibility under the capital account and lower corporate tax rates in the Shanghai free-trade zone, Citic Securities said. Shanghai has introduced 42 measures to develop the financial industry to support economic growth, Eastday.com reported yesterday. The city is trying to start innovative trials such as allowing private capital to set up banks, finance leasing and consumer finance companies, according to the report.

Hotel construction will soon be underway at Vancouver's former Evergreen Airport, work that could usher in other development as part of a long-planned mixed-use project. Crews have started preliminary work on a 99-room Hampton Inn and Suites on the northeastern border of the site. The 59-acre tract is on the northeast corner of Southeast Mill Plain Boulevard and 136th Avenue. The airport was closed in 2006, then purchased by Seattle-based Opus Northwest, which planned a "lifestyle" development of large and small retailers, offices, a hotel and housing. Those plans fell by the wayside as the economy faltered.

The airport was purchased for $10.4 million in 2011 by an LLC called B52 Point of Evergreen, a company affiliated with the developers of Chuck's Produce and Street Market. The company has built access roads to the site, sidewalks and curbs. It hired a commercial real estate firm to market the retail center and now, two years later, is building the first tenant space.A spokesman for B52 confirmed plans to start work on the hotel, but declined to say whether the company planned to launch additional projects on the site. Originally called The Landing at Evergreen Airport, the mixed-use development was planned to include upscale anchor stores such as Crate & Barrel, Whole Foods, Barnes & Noble and Chico's apparel.

City officials expect the hotel to take about 18 months to complete.Neighbors in the homes near the old airport have had mixed reactions to news that the first project is breaking ground on the site after a seven-year wait, said Ross Montgomery, president of the Airport Green Neighborhood Association. "Some folks would like to see the project get going because of the amenities in regards to shopping," he said. "There are others who won't like it because it will take away this great, 55-acre park, if you will. We are just hoping it will have the quality the developers promised."

A city hotel is playing its part in saving Britain’s endangered bees – by installing a beehive six storeys above the streets of the capital. The honeybees have been specially bred for the Royal Hotel in the city centre and it is hoped that the rooftop hive, which has been given its own room number of 6B, will eventually produce the hotel’s own brand of Royal honey for guests. Experts at local honey farm Nature’s Little Helpers, in Lisvane, Cardiff, have been working with the hotel on the project for two years, breeding their Cardiff bees and will be assisting in the management of the beehive.

The beekeepers have also trained two members of hotel staff, engineering manager Steve Harris and reservations manager, Scott Frankton as Royal bee keepers to look after the beehive. Jon Swingler, manager of the Royal Hotel, said: “We are committed to playing our part in worldwide efforts to save bees whose pollination of plants and food crops is vital to the planet. “We want to encourage building owners in Cardiff to follow us and install their own rooftop beehives; we would love to hear from them and share our experiences. It will be wonderful to produce our own, prized Royal Hotel Honey, but our main aim is to spread the word and encourage others to participate in conservation.”

The hotel bees will be flying up to a three mile radius around the hotel, making millions of journeys between the hives and plants, collecting pollen from Bute Park, private gardens and surrounding green areas. The Royal Hotel has also created posters and information leaflets to inform thousands of guests, who visit the 60-bedroom hotel from all over the UK and worldwide, about the bee campaign. The hotel, which first opened its doors to the public on Easter Monday April 2, 1866, hopes to encourage visitors to take the idea back to their towns and cities. Beekeeper Peter Shaw, of Nature’s Little Helpers, said: “Due to the poor weather at the start of the summer, installation of the Royal Hotel hive was delayed until late July.  We transported the bees to the roof of the hotel in the hive, which at this stage housed 8,000 bees, this number will rise to 40,000 to 50,000 by the end of the summer.

“We left them to settle for a week, to become oriented with their new location, and we established a water supply for them on the roof.  We are very excited to be involved in this project as city centres can certainly have an important role in fostering bee colonies and pollination across a wide area.” The hive could produce as much as 35lbs of honey in a good summer. For a number of years, the hotel has provided the Bee Kind range of honey-based toiletries in guest’s rooms, from a company which donates a share of profits to bee conservation.

The Metro Council voted unanimously Thursday to move forward on a plan for a publicly subsidized hotel at the Oregon Convention Center, sending the proposal to the Portland City Council and the Multnomah County commission. The Metro regional government also agreed to bring up concerns from competing hoteliers in negotiations with the proposed hotel's developers. The other hotel owners worry the subsidies could give the new hotel an unfair advantage.

Those hotel operators have called for a minimum nightly rate the hotel could charge, but Metro stopped short of describing a mechanism for ensuring the hotel doesn't undercut competitors. A rate floor like the one requested by hoteliers is unlikely, said Scott Cruickshank, executive director of the Oregon Convention Center. "We're working with Hyatt to make sure rates don't precipitate a decline in rates generally," Cruickshank said. Whatever comes of those negotiations would come in a final development agreement later this year. The hoteliers watched as The Nines hotel in downtown Portland was offered a $16.9 million loan from the Portland Development Commission, then put off its payments when the economy soured. At the same time, it discounted its rooms and undercut competitors.

"When there's a convention in town, that's good for everyone," said Tim Ramis, an attorney representing several downtown hotels. "But that's not every week of the year." Metro also added language specifying that its public funds would not be used for other projects, including a parking garage to be built adjacent to the hotel by StarTerra LLC of Portland, which also owns the land where the hotel is expected to be built.
The proposal under consideration calls for Mortenson Development, a Minneapolis firm, to build a $198 million Hyatt Regency hotel. Loans and grants from the city, state and Metro would directly subsidize $18 million of the cost. Another $60 million would be paid for with revenue bonds issued by Metro, which would repay them using proceeds from a local tax on hotel stays. The bond amount is based on how much Hyatt, which would own the hotel upon completion, projects it would raise in lodging taxes.

If Hyatt doesn't meet its projections, the gap would be filled using lodging taxes raised from other local hotels -- another part of the arrangement that irks hoteliers. The Portland City Council and the Multnomah County Commissioners will likely take up the issue in September, but a date hasn't been scheduled.

Renovations and openings are always fun to follow when it comes to the hotel industry, but it's the hotel news in regards to policies, trends, offerings and services that have the lasting impact beyond basic eye candy. This summer, we've seen some surprising changes begin to take place, the culmination of a few years of consumer feedback brewing behind the scenes. The industry was shocked when properties in New York announced they would discontinue room service, and the idea of doing away with overpriced mini bars has been met with mixed emotions. We’ve also seen hotels begin to entertain the idea of 24-hour stays, allowing guests a full day’s access to the room from the time they check in.

As the summer starts to come to a close (we’re just a little over two weeks from Labor Day!), we just want to stop and let these proposed changes sink in, as well as point out once again how incredible and monumental they are. There will be obvious hurdles to overcome as room service is replaced with grab-and-goes, mini bars morph into free fridge space, and relaxing mornings become commonplace after a late check in. But, as with any changing of the guard, we’ll have to be patient in allowing it all to stick. Our advice: Hang in there! It might take some time for the dust to settle, but we see a more practical, affordable, and reasonable industry emerging on the back end. And don’t worry – the luxury market isn’t going anywhere. There will always be properties that allow you the option of overpaying for snacks, but it has become clear that certain conveniences are not necessarily needed in mid-range, everyday-person hotels.

Just as we wouldn’t have believed where we are today five or ten years ago, one of the biggest questions is what the hotel industry will look like in the next decade. A few months ago, we talked about what a future hotel room might look like based on data collected about consumer use and preference. Will sitting areas begin to replace desks? Will the rooms still have a closet with doors? How much automation will we experience? Will standard check in/check out times have completely disappeared? Knowing that big changes can come as a result of our voices is exciting, for sure.

Ft. Lauderdale Airport Hotels|"Cruises Go Self-Serve With Wine"

At home, you want a beer or a glass of wine you help yourself. Cruise lines are increasingly adapting a similar style. Self-serve is becoming the rage. Celebrity Cruises started the trend in a rather elegant way, with Italian-made "enomatic" wine dispensers installed in the Cellar Masters wine bar on CelebritySolstice (launched in 2008), featuring fine wines from around the world. The idea was that cruise passengers can try a sampling whenever they want – just a 1-ounce taste in up to a 5-ounce glass – by swiping their shipboard spending card at the fancy dispensary machines. Only cards coded for those 21 and older will work on the self-serve machines. The machines can now be found on nearly every Celebrity ship.

Recently, Norwegian quietly added wine dispensers to its fleet, starting with the Norwegian Breakaway, which debuted in the spring. They will also be found on the Norwegian Getaway, which debuts from Miami in January. On Breakaway, the self-serve machines are in the atrium, buffet area and Studio Lounge (for solo travelers in Studio accommodations). On Getaway, the dispensers will be in the buffet, The Haven suite complex and Studio Lounge. Wes Court, director, Restaurant & Beverage Development and Operations at Norwegian, said passengers can pour themselves a taste (starting at about $2.75 for 1.5 ounces), a half glass or a full glass, choosing from several reds and whites at each machine.

Carnival has likewise added self-serve wine as an option in the Library Bar on its Carnival Breeze and on the newly revamped Carnival Sunshine (formerly Carnival Destiny). From dispensers in the Sunshine's Pizzeria del Capitano and in the deli area of the Lido Marketplace buffet, passengers can pour themselves a cold one with a swipe of their shipboard card – up to a 14-ounce glass of either Bud Light (for 28 cents per ounce) or Carnival's own branded beer, ThirstyFrog Red (for 29 cents per ounce). The trick here, though, is beer requires some experience to pour from a tap. If you don't know what you're doing you may get a glass of foam. The line is evaluating feedback from guests to see if the offer will be expanded to other ships, a Carnival spokesman said. Norwegian is also looking at possibly adding self-serve beer down the road.

"The whole philosophy behind this with wine is pretty cool and on the beer side too when you start talking about craft beers, the idea of trying a small sampling." Court said. "You could try two ounces of Opus One (the Bordeaux blend) and it's not $200 per bottle."

Hampton Inn Ft Lauderdale|"The Way Ahead For Cardiff's Hotel Sector In The Face Of Growing Competition"

George Bernard Shaw once observed that the advantage of a hotel is that it is a refuge from home life. Shaw’s dark Dublin humour finds resonance with his compatriot, Galway-born Margaret Waters, general manager of Cardiff’s Park Plaza Hotel and the city’s longest serving hotelier. Since her arrival in Wales on the eve of the 2000 Rugby World Cup Mrs Waters has managed the former Jury’s hotel, before moving to the Marriott in Swansea and then returning to Cardiff two years ago. Now she presides over one of the city’s leading hotels and, judging by the popularity of the bar and dining room at lunchtime, Shaw’s observation carries an element of truth. The latest figures from accountancy and business advisory firm BDO have shown Cardiff enjoyed a 4.4% rise in average daily room rates which leads her to say: “We are not seasonal businesses. As city centre hoteliers we look at quarters and the first quarter of 2013 was good for business thanks to help from the weather.

“March on the other hand had its share of bad weather and having snow didn’t help. “The second quarter particularly June, however saw double digit growth.” She added: “It’s easy to look at one month and think its positive news but overall the second quarter was still quite flat.” The first six months of the year, she explained, had been helped by the events in the city and having cricket’s ICC Champions Trophy in June was a major plus for hoteliers following the Six Nations rugby internationals and concerts staged at the Millennium Stadium featuring attractions like Rhianna and more recently Bruce Springsteen. Although mindful of her Irish antecedents, home for Mrs Waters is now Cardiff and its the Welsh capital her thoughts are focused on. Reflecting on her 14 years in the city she said: “The leisure business has grown during this time led by the St David’s Shopping Centre and the Dr Who Exhibition, which has been a bonus and Cardiff itself has never looked so good.”

There is, however, a downside to all this as she explains. “We have found that weekend business can be just Saturday nights. Sundays are not strong, which is the same in most cities but the weekend leisure business is steady and we have seen some growth. The biggest concern for me, as a hotelier, is the lack of corporate business midweek.” In this respect, having so many extra city centre hotels creates a greater degree of competition and the lack of growth in the corporate midweek business has caused concern, leading to much lower rates being offered. This, Ms Waters points out, is good for the customer but doesn’t attract more corporate business nor is it good for growth in the hotel sector. She said: “It’s certainly not good for owners who need a return on their investment and if the rates keep dropping that investment both current and future must be in jeopardy.” Then comes the siren warning. “As a city we are at risk of having many hotels – many that haven’t had investment for some time. When it comes to disposable income, many businesses have cut back and restricted the use of higher quality, higher priced hotels and this has had a negative effect on the average rate we charge.

“We should be able to appeal to companies coming into the city because of the availability of excellent rates. If we compare ourselves to Bristol, where hotels can command a rate of up to £15 higher a night than here, this makes Cardiff very good value for money.” From this perspective her belief is the city’s hotels are too dependent on events coming into the city and for many years there have been few new ones. She said: “Cardiff, as a capital city, shouldn’t depend on events. We should be able to drive our business while attracting new business into the city. This would help restaurants and bars while those shops in the St David’s shopping centre play an important part in attracting new businesses to sustain that expenditure.” Access has, she believes, always been an issue with the perceived distance between London and Cardiff being a major factor in this.

Though only two hours away, Cardiff is still regarded as being far from London and London is currently enjoying an amazing year with June and July matching last year’s Olympic Games. On the purchase of Cardiff Airport by the Welsh Government, Margaret hopes it will herald a more efficiently run operation making it attractive for companies to fly here – opening Europe to Cardiff and increasing the possibilities of increased inward investment. This, she said, is something of a perennial problem as is that of a convention centre – the missing link in the city’s infrastructure chain. With confidence born of empiricism she said: “Cardiff is ready to increase its capacity and open up to world trade if we could only get people here to experience Welsh hospitality.” She added: “Since 1999 the city has been discussing the need for a convention centre and it’s unfortunate that to date we have received no confirmation of when or where its going to happen and yet the city is crying out for this.

“We have enough hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops to cater for large conventions. It’s safe to say that until we announce a convention centre, Cardiff, as a capital city, falls behind other much less attractive cities.” There is, she acknowledges, a debate as to where it should be sited. She said: “We have seen how successful the Millennium Stadium has been in staging major sporting events. The biggest positive is its location and that’s because of its proximity to the city centre, making visitors aware of the immediate environment.” Location she emphasised is, critical and needs to be close to the bus and train stations with easy access from the airport. “Its all a question of infrastructure that matches the expectations,” she added. “Research conducted in Edinburgh and Glasgow has shown that convention centres have a positive impact and drive not just convention business but also business in general by attracting to these cities companies that would not previously have considered them as venues.”

Her subtext is one of image enhancement, increasing the profile of an already vibrant and fashionable city, soon to be exposed to Premiership soccer with Cardiff City that will generate an extra revenue stream for commerce and the leisure industry in particular. For such a project to be undertaken anywhere but Cardiff she argues would be disastrous and certainly not an option. Having said that, she returns to an earlier point raised which is that “the midweek corporate gap remains.”  To this is added the rider that Wales is not emerging from the recession as quickly as she would have wished, despite more people taking more short UK breaks. Such a market has to be catered for and this raises the question of skilled labour and attracting young people into the catering industry. I remind her that when she came to Cardiff in 1999 there was no problem in generating sales. It was Rugby World Cup year and several prestigious conferences had been organised on the back of the major sporting event. At that time recruitment was difficult but since then there has been a radical change in both quality and quantity of young people being attracted to the industry.

She said: “It’s fair to say that our industry has been poorly perceived by both public and young people. The reality is it now presents career opportunities unrivalled in other fields.” Bringing this down to a personal level she added: “I was 24 when I became a general manager and I don’t know many careers where you can attain managerial status at such a young age. “With new legislation and the realisation that staff need training, colleges in the area have done much in this respect, so skills shortages are not a problem.” Into this equation she adds the European factor, those who come to and are trained in Wales. It is, she believes, important that the hospitality business attracts a European element and in her team are two senior managers from Eastern Europe. As to the future, the evolutionary process will continue and visitor numbers increase. Training, even in difficult times, remains important with investment still a priority. Her clarion call is “be ready when this happens.” In the meantime customer satisfaction, competition awareness, especially that from outside Wales, remains her preoccupation and to this can be added her thoughts on the role of Cardiff Council and Welsh Government must play in attracting businesses to Wales. “The perception of where Cardiff sits in relation to London and other UK regional centres must change,” she said. “The whole infrastructure question is important and in the coming decade we should have an even better city once the council and Welsh Government work together to attract businesses here. Our role as hoteliers is to provide people to look after them and exceed their expectation.” As George Bernard Shaw of Dublin might have observed, Margaret Waters of Galway is doing just that.

While thousands of New Yorkers scrambled for a place to live after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, one Queens woman saw a chance to cash in. Caterina Curatolo has been living for free in city-funded hotels since concocting a story about losing her home to the storm last year, state investigators charge. The 48 year-old Fresh Meadows woman was arrested Monday and charged by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman with fraud and grand larceny. She allegedly bilked taxpayers out of more than $87,000. Most of the funds went to 269 days in hotel rooms set aside for Sandy victims, Schneiderman said. Curatolo is also accused of misusing money given to her for food, spending at least some of it at Best Buy, Dress Barn and Marshalls.

Sri Lanka's tourism sector needs over US$ 3.5 billion in investment to build the required 40,000 rooms to cater to the anticipated 2.5 million tourists in 2016.The main contribution will be made by Shangri-La Colombo, Hyatt Regency, Movenpick, Sheraton, Marino Sands Hotel, ITC Hotel and Suncity Business Hotel and others in this regard. Currently,Colombo is only equipped with 2,000 five star rooms which are in short supply. With the completion of the Movenpick and Hyatt the country will see another 700 rooms being added during the next 3 to 4 years. "We believe there would be demand for city five star rooms with the expected growth in business, crew and MICE travellers. Further the infrastructure development in the country and being strategically located to expanding economies and large source markets for tourism such as India, China, and Singapore, the country offers good potential for growth", according to a TKS Securities research report.

The report has identified nine large scale mixed development projects, five standalone apartment projects and six three to five star hotel projects which have been announced in and around the city of Colombo. "The developments we have identified together will add 3,000 apartment units and more than 3,000 three to five star hotel rooms in the coming 4 to 5 years. However we do not expect a glut in hotels, apartments and retail space as the development will be automatically phased out, TKS Securities said. In the mixed development arena, Havelock City has already completed and sold two apartments towers (226 units) and another two apartment towers (218 units) are under construction. Meanwhile Hyatt Regency and Platinum One have partly completed structures for majority of the level of storeys. However apart from these developments all other projects are yet to break ground. Therefore we believe that the Colombo metropolis will function with a marginal capacity increase during the next 2 to 3 years where we would not see a real growth until the next 4 to 5 years, the report said.

The Australian based Crown group will invest US$ 350 million on a mixed development project along with a Sri Lankan investor. Government permission was granted for the project under the Strategic Development Act purely for a tourism project. Hyatt Regency project with 475 hotel rooms and 90 serviced apartments is expected to open in 2014-15 with an investment of US$ 159 million.

The US$ 170 million EoN Resorts project located at D.R.Wijewardene Mw Colombo 10 will comprise 300 rooms, 100 luxury apartment units, 150,000 sqft retail space, 2,000 sqft food court and Convention centre with 2,000 seating capacity. Movenpick Colombo, a 24 story five star complex, developed by Softlogic Holdings will comprise 224 rooms, conference and meeting facilities, four restaurants serving diverse, cuisines, and a full range of recreational facilities, such as a fully equipped gymnasium, a swimming pool, and a health spa and other facilities. Total cost of the project is estimated to be US$ 46.6 million. Shangri-La Colombo hotel project with 500 hotel rooms is expected to open 2016-17. Shangri-La Colombo will comprise Sushi bar, steakhouse, seafood market and Irish pub, specialty restaurants such as Indian, Islamic, Szechuan and Macanese,Sky lounge, meeting facilities ,Swimming pool and tennis courts Total Investment for the Shangri-La Colombo hotel project is $ 400 million.

The $ 80 million Sheraton Colombo project is expected to open in the near future and the hotel will comprise 306 rooms. The project will spread across in 100 perches Galle Road, Colombo 3. Colombo Marino Sands Hotel project, developed by Damro Group with an investment of US$ 40 million will comprise 270 room 12 storey luxury hotel and a department store. In addition, the hotel will comprise three basement car parks ,200 ft roof top infinity pool, four restaurants and other facilities. The US$ 23 million, Suncity Business Hotel in Green Path, Colombo 3 is expected to open in 2016. The project is developed by Suncity Hotels (Pvt) Ltd and will comprise 240 rooms, roof top swimming pool, open air club lounge ,dining restaurant, gym, five lifts and car parking.
