Renovations and openings are always fun to follow when it comes to the hotel industry, but it's the hotel news in regards to policies, trends, offerings and services that have the lasting impact beyond basic eye candy. This summer, we've seen some surprising changes begin to take place, the culmination of a few years of consumer feedback brewing behind the scenes. The industry was shocked when properties in New York announced they would discontinue room service, and the idea of doing away with overpriced mini bars has been met with mixed emotions. We’ve also seen hotels begin to entertain the idea of 24-hour stays, allowing guests a full day’s access to the room from the time they check in.

As the summer starts to come to a close (we’re just a little over two weeks from Labor Day!), we just want to stop and let these proposed changes sink in, as well as point out once again how incredible and monumental they are. There will be obvious hurdles to overcome as room service is replaced with grab-and-goes, mini bars morph into free fridge space, and relaxing mornings become commonplace after a late check in. But, as with any changing of the guard, we’ll have to be patient in allowing it all to stick. Our advice: Hang in there! It might take some time for the dust to settle, but we see a more practical, affordable, and reasonable industry emerging on the back end. And don’t worry – the luxury market isn’t going anywhere. There will always be properties that allow you the option of overpaying for snacks, but it has become clear that certain conveniences are not necessarily needed in mid-range, everyday-person hotels.

Just as we wouldn’t have believed where we are today five or ten years ago, one of the biggest questions is what the hotel industry will look like in the next decade. A few months ago, we talked about what a future hotel room might look like based on data collected about consumer use and preference. Will sitting areas begin to replace desks? Will the rooms still have a closet with doors? How much automation will we experience? Will standard check in/check out times have completely disappeared? Knowing that big changes can come as a result of our voices is exciting, for sure.
