Tata-owned Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) is likely to get an extension of three months to operate the Taj Mansingh Hotel in posh Lutyens’ Bungalow Zone here after its lease expires next month. The IHCL has been running the landmark property for the past 35 years and its lease is due to expire on October 10. The New Delhi Municipal Council, which owns the property located in the heart of Delhi on Mansingh Road, is yet to come to any conclusion on auctioning the hotel as it is waiting for the Solicitor-General’s opinion. The NDMC had sought the opinion of the Solicitor-General after a nod from the Home Ministry earlier this month. The NDMC officials said the civic body is likely to extend the lease with the IHCL for operating the hotel for at least three months as it cannot reach a decision on the issue until it gets the opinion of the Solicitor-General.

The decision to grant the three months’ extension is likely to be taken during the next council meeting to be held on October 7. “The election code of conduct for the Assembly polls in Delhi is likely to be in place in a few days and it will become difficult to auction the property during that time,” an official said. However, according to NDMC chairperson Jalaj Srivastava, the agency can approach the Election Commission for a “special permission” to auction the property in that case. “If the agency gets the Solicitor-General’s opinion during the time when the code of conduct is in place, we can seek special permission from the Election Commission to allow us to auction the hotel,” Mr. Srivastava said. The hotel has been in news since its lease ended in October, 2011. The property, constructed by the NDMC, was given to the Indian Hotels Company Limited in 1978 on lease for 33 years. When the lease came to an end in 2011 and the NDMC was about to renew it, the Urban Development Ministry intervened and asked it to auction the property. As time was running out, the NDMC gave a year’s extension to IHCL. While the company expected the lease to be renewed in October 2012, the process was stalled temporarily as NDMC could not take a final call. The agency had then decided to give one-year extension to the Tatas.

The cracked ruins of the former Copthorne Hotel in Christchurch city centre may remain for months while structural engineers investigate the cause of its collapse. Construction workers ran for their lives on Saturday afternoon when the 10-storey hotel on Colombo Street collapsed like a "pack of cards" during demolition. The floors collapsed, but the walls on the northern and southern ends of the building still remain. The structural integrity of the remaining walls is not known, but a large crack can be seen in the base of the northern wall, which appears to be misshapen. A Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Enterprise spokesman said a prohibition notice stopped all work on the site while engineers assess the building.

It was not known when the engineering report would be complete. The Copthorne Hotel building was in the middle of scheduled demolition by Southern Demolition and Salvage. It is an owner-controlled demolition and the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority is not involved. Cera said it would not be investigating the incident.Southern Demolition and Salvage owner Alan Edge could not be reached for comment yesterday but said earlier that he believed the collapse was a result of the stress of aftershocks.

More than 10,000 five-star hotel rooms in Dubai are in need of refurbishment, placing significant burden on hotel operators as they consider taking rooms out of operation to undertake the necessary work, a new report has said. EC Harris, the global built asset consultancy, estimates that the cost of renovation is in the region of AED325,000 per room. There were an estimated 23,500 five star rooms in Dubai in 2012. Christopher Seymour, head of property UAE at EC Harris said: "Some of the hotel assets in Dubai are now over 15 years old and to maintain the quality of the offering, protect the brand and meet customer expectations, refurbishment programmes are becoming a requirement."The quality of the hospitality accommodation in the UAE is very high and with the wave of new hotel construction in the pipeline, we will see some operators forced to undertake refit and refresh of their older hotel assets in order to remain competitive." He said refurbishment programmes should be targeted at quiet periods to reduce the revenue effect of taking rooms and facilities out of operation.

However, that quiet period is seen to be reducing as the appeal of Dubai as a destination increases. Most operators now view the only 'window' as late May to early September - a period of just 14 weeks. Seymour added: "Careful planning and programme management are very important to ensure success. Using tried and tested processes from the busy tourism markets of Europe and North America demonstrates that it is feasible to carry out major hotel refurbishments whilst remaining in operation." Sheraton Dubai Creek Hotel closed in July and is scheduled to reopen next spring as it undergoes an extensive refurbishment. The hotel announced that it is undergoing a full refurbishment of all guest rooms, the Vivaldi restaurant and other facilities in the hotel. Dubai hotels posted big increases in occupancy and revenues during August compared to the year-earlier period, according to data released by STR Global. The city's hospitality sector witnessed increases in supply (5.81 percent) and demand (30.4 percent) while occupancy rose 23.3 percent to 72.6 percent. STR Global also said hotels reported a 8.7 percent increase in average daily rate to AED753.16 and a 34 percent rise in revenue per available room to AED546.61.

September 2013 might be remembered as the month when the Olympia-area hotel market began to heat up with new announcements, closed transactions and pitched projects, including several along Capitol Way. The newest of these hotel announcements came Wednesday when the downtown Olympia hotel that has been known as the Phoenix Inn became a DoubleTree by Hilton, general manager Janine Condit said.“It’s a positive change for the area,” she said. Rooms and common spaces have been remodeled, and a new bar and restaurant have been added, Condit said. The property ownership group hasn’t changed. A trio of companies — Aimbridge Hospitality, JMI Realty and Merrill Lynch, which bought the Phoenix Inn in 2006 — still owns the hotel but decided to rebrand it to DoubleTree because Aimbridge already operates several hotels under that brand, she said. But Olympia-area hotel announcements Wednesday didn’t end with DoubleTree.

Here’s what also happened:
  •  The Governor Hotel, also on Capitol Way, officially has sold for $3.4 million to Rusco USA LLC of Tacoma. Ryan Kang, the new general manager, said the hotel will undergo a modest renovation, then reopen next month. Ultimately, though, the plan is to do a full remodel and eventually operate it as a Holiday Inn, he said. The new owners, Kang said, see a lot of potential in downtown Olympia. “They are excited to be part of downtown and part of Olympia,” he said.
  •  Han Kim of Seattle, whose group Hotel Concepts previously brought two hotels to Lacey, has closed on its acquisition of the Capitol Plaza Hotel on Capitol Way, paying $1.7 million for the property. Kim said he is now awaiting approval from Marriott to turn it into an extended-stay brand called TownePlace Suites. Kim’s group also plans to bring a Hilton Garden Inn and a Marriott Courtyard to property they own at Henderson Boulevard and Interstate 5.

Kim also is part of an ownership group that bought the Bailey Motor Inn on Martin Way in Olympia that has since closed. Kim said he met with city officials Wednesday to get feedback on a new plan for the property: a mixed-use development, including a two-story medical office building. He learned Wednesday, though, that the property has “lots of issues,” including nearby wetlands. A new hotel also could be coming to one of the Port of Olympia’s East Bay parcels near State Avenue. Seattle developer, Lorig Associates, has an option on the property, and that option has been extended through the end of the year, port senior manager of business development Mike Reid said. “A hotel is still the primary development concept,” he said. Reid said the recent hotel news hadn’t created any sense of urgency for the development. “My sense is the hotel activity that is occurring is the renaming and rebranding of hotels in the marketplace,” he said, adding that the port’s project, if it moves forward, is the “introduction and construction of a new facility.”

For those inspired by hotel design, there is now a chance to take some of it home, legally. The 100-year-old Hotel Plaza Athénée Paris will hold its first auction of vintage and not-so-old collectibles as it prepares to close for a seven-month renovation. About 1,000 items primarily from the lobby, restaurant and bar will be auctioned live on Oct. 7 and 8. Auction items range from plates found in the hotel’s Alain Ducasse restaurant to sculptures including a bust of Marie-Antoinette, oversize Louis XVI-style vases, Murano glass chandeliers, leather and mahogany liquor cabinets, and even the marble-topped oak concierge desk.

Bidding will start at 150 euros (about $195)  for embroidered cushions; most items are estimated at under 1,000 euros, although a pair of bronze floor sculpture by the artist Jean-Michel Folon are expected to sell for between 50,000 and 70,000 euros. Expected to reopen in May, the hotel will close Oct. 1 to undergo an expansion to add 25 rooms, more meeting space and a new ballroom. Francois Delahaye, chief operating officer of Dorchester Collection, which manages the hotel, said that former guests have been the most enthused about the auction, including one Frenchman who said he plans to install Plaza Athénée drapery and furniture in a second home as an homage to the hotel. Auction items will be on exhibit at the hotel Oct. 4 to 6 and can also be found online at Artcurial.

Organizers promised that the America's Cup would boost San Francisco's economy and after a lackluster start, the promise appeared to be coming true Monday as available hotel rooms in San Francisco were in serious demand. Lucia Tuthill was in San Francisco Monday to see her son, but found a big surprise when she tried to book a hotel a week ago. "Prices were exorbitant, very, very high,” said Tuthill. She settled for a room in Hayes Valley, five miles from the Embarcadero where she’d hoped to stay. “Even at the higher rates there was no availability, we’re very lucky but we’re very far away,” said Tuthill. Crowds cluttered San Francisco’s waterfront Monday, some for the America’s Cup races, many others for Oracle Week and other conferences. Washington, DC-attorney Stuart Sirkin was in the city Monday for a tax conference, and he wanted to extend his stay. “Everything was booked totally, when I tried about a week and a half ago,” said Sirkin. A difficult situation to believe when there's 215 hotels in the city, equalling about 33,000 rooms in total. The Hotel Vitale on the Embarcadero had a “handful” of one-bed rooms available Monday afternoon for $599 per night. The Fairmont Hotel, where some America’s Cup and Oracle Week attendees were staying, was fully booked up Monday, as were the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero’s 802 rooms.

“It’s a bit of a challenge with America’s Cup, as it would be if the World Series or playoffs or any of those things came around,” said Hyatt Regency Embarcadero General Manager David Lewin. A reporter asked Lewin what the hotel would tell a guest who wanted to extend a stay in order to see more races. “You’d tell him you don’t have any rooms, and if they’re insistent and say ‘I’m not going to check out’ then technically, you can’t evict them,” explained Lewin, saying that to kick out the guest would be in violation of state law. He added that scenario exemplified in his answer hadn’t occurred that week “yet.” In that case, the law allows hotels to charge their maximum rate.  “If you’re booking a hotel room at the last minute and the hotels are virtually sold out, it’s the equivalent of buying an airline flight at the last minute,” said San Francisco Hotel Council Executive Director Kevin Carroll. Carroll told KTVU that guests spend more money outside the hotels then inside, and that the America’s Cup has created a significant economic boon for San Francisco, even if it wasn’t quite what supporters had originally hoped.“The race isn’t over,” said Carroll. “We’re all pulling for Team Oracle to extend this as far as it can.”

The room is decidedly tropical without being twee. Gone are the gaudy pastel pictures of fish and coral that once bedevilled too many hotels in Queensland’s north. The decor draws inspiration from nature – timber teamed with white plantation shutters that slide to reveal the inlet. The best vantage point to view the vista is reclining in the spa bath while sipping on something that tickles the end of your nose. It has amenities expected in a five-star hotel – a king-sized bed, desk, lounge area, and one of those capsule-powered coffee machines.The menu offered crispy baby barramundi served with tamarind, chilli and garlic sauce. What emerged from the Tamarind kitchen was a spiky, bulky creature from the deep smothered in a cerise-esque sauce. Boy, they breed ‘em big in the far north. It was a challenge to work out where to start, and near-impossible to put the fork down. The cassava and coconut syrup pudding served with dark palm sugar cream and peanut brittle ice-cream presents the same dilemma.

East meet west in Tamarind, which the Reef Hotel Casino’s signature restaurant. There is also the casual dining and bar area - Flinders Bar & Grill – and the Café China Restaurant that serves Peking and Hong Kong cuisine, Yum Cha and seafood.There’s gambling. If spending hours sitting on a stool, pressing a button and listening to the bells and whistles of gaming machines fails to rock your world, it could be tempting to discount Pullman Reef Hotel Casino as a place to stay. But the casino is placed in one section of the venue well away from the accommodation. It has plenty of other onsite options to occupy visitors including free entertainment at Vertigo, the Velvet Underground Nightclub, the roof-top Cairns Wildlife Dome home to more than 400 species of animals, the pool deck and gymnasium.  Cairns is a top spot for a mini break. Pullman Reef Hotel Casino can serve as a luxurious base to take a drive to Crystal Cascades for a swim, take a trip to the reef or drive to Caravonica Lakes to ride on the Skyrail traversing 7.5 kilometres above the rainforest to Kuranda. Cairns is also perfect for pedestrians – flat and easy to navigate – so visitors can use the hotel as a base to explore the CBD on foot.

Behind two goals by junior Darcy Jerman, the University of Colorado soccer team defeated UNLV 3-1 in the final game of the Omni Hotels Colorado Women’s Soccer Classic. In front of 1,211 fans, the Buffaloes shined for a full 90 minutes in another record-breaker. Colorado concludes non-conference play with a stellar 8-1 record, with their only loss coming to then-ranked No. 16 Denver. After starting the season a program-best perfect 6-0, the Buffs continue one of their best starts. Colorado won a record eight conference games this season, topping the previous bests of seven in 1998, 2003, ’04 and ’08. This is also only the third time in program history the Buffs have won at least eight of their first nine games. “It’s awesome just because we’re starting Pac-12 next weekend, and I feel like we really hit a lot of momentum,” Jerman said. “We’re making good strides and we’re really working hard this season, so it’s good to win this last one and be 8-1 going into the Pac-12.” A tie on Friday and a loss to the Buffs moves UNLV to a 5-3-2 record. Colorado held UNLV to just six shots, all coming in the second half. For the fifth time this season, the Buffs took at least 20 shots, this time striking the ball 23 times, ranking in the top 20 at CU for most shots in a single game. The win is the Buffs’ sixth multiple goal game of the season.

Once again, the Buffs scored early and in the closing minutes. Darcy Jerman put the Buffs up 1-0 in just the third minute of the game, scoring off an assist from Brie Hooks. Defender Heather Ward helped give the Buffs some insurance before the break, heading one in off an Anne Stuller corner kick. UNLV’s Brittney Gideon, who led the Rebels with three shots, got her team on the board in the 77th minute to remain in contention. Colorado put the game away in the 82nd minute when Tori Cooper got fouled in the box. Darcy Jerman booted the ball in from a penalty kick to give the Buffs the 3-1 victory. “Well, the first goal was a great run from Brie,” CU head coach Danny Sanchez said. “She got to the end line and we’ve been talking a lot about when you get into dangerous spots, picking people out and she was able to pick out Darcy and it was good for Darcy to get that first goal. The second goal, and we had quite a few corner kicks in a row, we had some good service ... So it was a very good finish on the corner. And the third goal was really just Tori Cooper’s work to get in the box and get pulled down and Darcy debarred the penalty kick.  So, pretty good goals, maybe could have had a couple more. But at the end of the day three goals is a good performance.”

The Buffs were on an early attack all weekend. At 2:40, the Buffs not only took the first shot of the game, but netted the first goal. Hooks at the right found Jerman at the center of the net. From 18 yards out, Jerman had on open look and booted it in. The goal was 12th fastest in program history. After scoring at the 2:15 mark against Stony Brook on Friday, the Buffs have now scored two goals in the first three minutes of the game twice this season. The only other times the Buffs have accomplished that feat was in 2007 and 2009. (Nikki Marshall scored at the 23 second and 2:36 marks against St. Mary’s College in the Buffs’ 8-1 blowout in ’09.) “It felt really good just because I’ve been having chances earlier this season, it just hasn’t come together,” Jerman said. “Brie had a beautiful cross in there and I was just there and shot and it was awesome. It feels good to get one under my belt, well two now.” The Buffs kept dominating the offense, taking four more consecutive shots in four minutes. Stuller was blocked in 11th minute, and Olivia Pappalardo got her head on the ball following a corner, but Kylie Wassell grabbed the save. Wassell had to work again just one minute later, when Madison Krauser had a great look in front of the net.

In the 25th minute, the Buffs had another chance, with Krauser closing in on the net and finding her ball saved at the left corner. Stuller was ready for the quick rebound, but Colorado was called offsides. With less than 14 minutes left in the first half, Hayley Hughes rushed from deep to close to the net, up against two defenders, she shot the ball wide left. The Buffs kept the pressure, but the Rebels grabbed three consecutive saves. Despite the defensive pressure, the Buffs kept the pace, with back-to-back corners. On the second, Stuller set up a great ball to Ward at the far post. Ward headed the ball in low to give the Buffs the 2-0 lead with six minutes remaining before halftime. Ward, who has shine as one of the starting four in the backline, has taken just four shots in two seasons with the Buffs, with three on goal. “It was a great ball from Anne,” Ward said. “It was kind of outside the box and she just chipped it in to the back post and I was able to get up and get my head on it.”  The Rebels looked to even the score early in the second half. In the 48th minute, A UNLV corner kept the ball on the left side of the net. After some solid pressure by the Buffs, Susie Bernal took the Rebel’s first shot of the game from close range. Annie Brunner hopped on the ball for the save. Though the ball got loose, Hooks swooped by the left side of the net to clear the ball and keep the Buffs out of danger. UNLV had another great opportunity in the in the 54th, but Brittney Gideon just missed the net with a hard shot at the crossbar. The Buffs quickly responded, with Tori Cooper taking her second straight shot. She got the ball from Krauser at the left, and with few defenders took a close range shot, but sent the ball high. Colorado was at it again in the 62nd. Stuller approached from the left, and edged the net at the right post. With the keeper out of the net, Stuller had an open look but knocked the crossbar.

Both teams kept up pressure, with the Rebels forcing Brunner to work for a save in the 65th minute. The Buffs then went on a 5-0 shooting run in a seven minute span, but couldn’t reach the back of the net. A Rebel line change helped give the squad some momentum. Less than a minute after the substitutions, UNLV got on the board. The Rebels created some space, and Gideon was able to get a look from 18 yards to score in the 77th minute. Gaby Vasquez and Jenn Wolfe were credited with the assists. “We were winning 2-0, and that’s a dangerous lead in soccer,” Jerman said. “We might have relaxed for a minute and I think that their goal sparked us back up again, and we came back strong.” Gideon went for it again at 80:39, but shot the ball just high. The Buffs got back on the attack, and with less than nine minutes remaining in regulation, Cooper drew a foul in the box to set up a penalty kick. Jerman took the shot in the 82nd minute, hitting the ball to the left corner and just past the keeper.

Jerman scored her first goals of the season and had her first multiple goal game of her career in the victory. She is the third player this season to have a multi-goal performance, joining Hooks and Stuller. This is just the fifth time in program history that at least three players have had a multi-goal game in a single season. The Buffs are pleased with the win and hope to keep their momentum going, but know that a big challenge awaits them next weekend as Pac-12 Conference play begins against No. 2 Stanford. “I feel like we’re ready,” Jerman said. “We’re at a way better spot than we were last year, and I’m just ready to prove a point in the Pac-12 because we have everything to prove and nothing to lose.”

It's a good time to be in the hotel business in the greater Houston area, a new report from San Francisco-based hotel consultant PKF Consulting LLC shows. The annual report, done on behalf of the Hotel & Lodging Association of Greater Houston and based on survey results from 60 general managers of local hotels, predicts that demand for Houston-area hotel rooms — which increased 4.5 percent through the second quarter of 2013 — will increase 2.3 percent in 2014, 4.2 percent in 2015, 5.2 percent in 2016 and 4 percent in 2017.

Numerous factors are driving the predicted increase in demand, including:
  • the booming oil & gas industry;
  • convention activity, which is expected to get a major boost when the 1,000-room Marriott Marquis convention center hotel is completed (scheduled for 2016);
  • Exxon Mobil Corp.'s (NYSE: XOM) new corporate campus in Springwoods Village;
  • Southwest Airlines' (NYSE: LUV) new international terminal at Hobby Airport, set for completion in 2015;
  • and major sporting events on the horizon, including the NCAA Final Four in 2016 and the Super Bowl's return to Houston in 2017.
Meanwhile, supply — much of which coming from the Marriott Marquis — will increase accordingly. The number of rooms in greater Houston will increase 1.6 percent in 2014, 2.9 percent in 2015, 4.8 percent in 2016 and 6.3 percent in 2017, the report states.Other new Houston-area hotels on the horizon include four others downtown:

  • the 200-room Westin Houston Downtown (formerly the Inn at the Ballpark), set to open Oct. 10;
  • a Holiday Inn Flagship, on the site of the former Savoy Hotel on Main St.;
  • a 250-room JW Marriott, scheduled for completion in 2014;
  • and a 166-room SpringHill Suites, by mid-2015, which will accompany the current 191-room Courtyard Houston Downtown Convention Center and the 171-room Residence Inn Houston Downtown Convention Center.

In addition to downtown, the increase in rooms will be concentrated in the energy corridor and the Galleria/Greenway area, according to the report. "While adding new supply, we're at 69 percent occupancy, not 55 percent like during the recession," said PKF Vice President Randy McCaslin, who presented the report Thursday to hundreds of hotel executives at the Hilton Americas-Houston hotel downtown. "That makes a big difference in turns of being able to absorb new supply." The average occupancy rate at Houston-area hotels through the second quarter of 2013 was 67.8 percent — up nearly 2.5 percent from 2012 and up nearly 8 percent from 2011. The PFK report forecasts the occupancy rate for 2014 will be 68.3 percent, 69.1 percent in 2015, 69.4 percent in 2016 and 67.9 percent in 2017. McCaslin noted that an average occupancy rate above 65 percent is a signal that supply needs to increase. "Hold on to your hats — the next two years are going to be fun," he said.

Andaz, the upscale hotel chain managed by Hyatt Hotels & Resorts, recently announced that it will open its first Latin American property, Andaz Papagayo on Península Papagayo in Costa Rica’s northwest Pacific Coast on Dec. 15. The 153-room hotel is set on a 2,223-acre development on a jagged pair of peninsulas along the Bay of Culebra and will have an open-air lobby, a marina with a full menu of boating services and an 11,000-square-foot spa with nine treatment rooms.

Dining options will include a tapas-style restaurant, a fine-dining seafood boîte and an all-day casual restaurant that is built around a tree and has several irregular mezzanine levels to mimic the shape of the oyster mushrooms that grow nearby. “The idea is to give our guests a sense of place as much as possible,” the property’s director of sales and marketing, Vincent De Croock, said. The guest rooms will all have balconies with bay views and be decorated with local woven textiles and carved artifacts. Room rates start at $400.

One of Rome's most celebrated hotels has been bought by the owner of London's Dorchester in a deal worth an estimated €105m (£87.8m).The Hotel Eden, which became the headquarters for Britain's military command after the Second World War, was snapped-up by the Dorchester Collection on Wednesday. The Dorchester Collection said it planned to renovate the 121-room hotel - where Penthouse suites start at €5,000 per night - following the deal with Starman Hotels - set up as a joint venture between Starwood Capital Group and the failed Lehman Brothers in 2005. Hotel Eden has played host to guests including King Alfonso XIII of Spain, as well as latter-day screen icons Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman and Italian film director Federico Fellini. Dorchester Collection, which is owned by the Brunei Investment Agency, a sovereign wealth fund ultimately controlled by the Sultan of Brunei, now owns 10 luxury hotels in Europe and the United States, and has said it is looking to expand into Asia and the Middle East. Built in 1834 and converted in 1889 by German hotelier Francesco Nistelweck, Hotel Eden is Dorchester’s second acquisition in Italy, and is known for the spectacular views from its sixth-floor terrace. You may have noticed several hotels have broken ground in Regina, or are planning to soon. With nine hotels planned by 2016, the number of rooms available in Regina could increase 25 per cent to over 3750. “Regina is showing one of the highest occupancy rates in Canada at just over 76 per cent,” said Tracy Fahlman, Regina Hotel Association CEO. The boom is due in part to more major events coming to Regina.This year alone, the city has hosted the Juno Awards, Paul McCartney, and this November, the Grey Cup. “We’re starting to get bookings into 2017,” Fahlman said. “It shows how strong our market is in terms of an event destination.” Whether they’re here for an event or not, keeping travelers busy is important too.

ExploreRegina.com launched Monday, taking the traditional book of restaurants and attractions online. “When you start talking millions of people coming here annually, we can’t just assume they know stuff,” said Lorne Pavelick, one of the site’s creators. “It’s important we provide detailed, accurate information.” As the number of visitors climbs, developers see the need for more rooms. “When you look at five years ago, we didn’t have near the occupancy levels we have now,” said Larry Hiles of the Regina Regional Opportunities Commission (RROC). “I think it’s a pent up demand for hotels.” The hotel business is booming in nearly all parts of the city, including the Warehouse District and the east end, which hotel officials say covers a wide-range of travelers. “Downtown will typically accommodate corporate travelers, then you look to the outside of the city, and they’ll accommodate a lot of sporting events and special events,” Fahlman said.

Green Bay's Mayor Jim Schmitt announced a delay in the beginning of the renovation of the Hotel Northland Monday. The developer was supposed to start the project next month. After a closed door meeting with the Iowa developers, Mayor Jim Schmitt said it will take longer for the doors of the Hotel Northland to reopen. "We want to make sure everything is connected and it's financed properly,” said Schmitt. The Frantz-Hobart development team says it wants to turn the 90-year-old building where visiting football teams stayed during the Lombardi era from senior apartments into a 160 room boutique hotel. But the developer says it still does not have all the financing it needs for the $35 million project. "We came to the conclusion that we still had some more work to do here in the near future. Hopefully, we'll have everything put together by November sometime,” said Jim Hobart. Hobart would not say just how much they need to raise.

However, developers say they're looking to taxpayers for ways to help them out. Those include historic, state, and new market tax credits. "They want to do it right. And to do it right, there's a complicated financing package. To do it right, it's so critical that we ensure the integrity of that building,” said Schmitt. Also, Frantz-Hobart developers say they still haven't completed drawings of what the classic Green Bay landmark may look like.  And those plans may not be ready until next month. "We did have some set-backs here and there but now I think we're on course,” said Hobart. Developers tell FOX 11 that if everything stays to the current schedule, this new Hotel Northland building would be open in March of 2015. That's just as the renovations are set to finish on the KI Convention Center. Frantz-Hobart bought the building from the city earlier this year for $3.1 million.

The Sheraton Waikiki on Oahu, the St. Regis Princeville Resort on Kauai and the Puakea Ranch on the Big Island have been named among the “Top 20 Beach Hotels” by Sunset Magazine. Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ Sheraton Waikiki was named for being midway along the 2-mile stretch of Waikiki Beach, and for its $188 million top-to-bottom renovation that gave it a 21st-century polish, despite the 1970’s high rise architecture of the building. The article noted Waikiki is the “most forgiving place in the world to learn to surf or steer an outrigger canoe.” St. Regis Princeville Resort on Kauai, another Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ hotel, was named to the list for having the best view on the Hawaiian Islands. The article noted the hotel’s mountain-to-bay views from what it calls a private beach — although all of Hawaii’s beaches are actually public beaches — and a “jillion-dollar redo” last fall that gives the hotel a contemporary Hawaiian look. The article named Puakea Ranch’s four private bungalows on the Big Island to the list as a tropical estate and an anti-resort. It called the property refreshingly rustic, noting guests can collect eggs to cook with from a chicken coop and ride one of the ranch’s horses for a view of the Kohala Coast.

Other hotels on the list are: La Jolla Shores Hotel in La Jolla, Calif.; Ocean Park Motel in San Francisco, Calif.; Hotel La Casa del Camino in Laguna Beach, Calif.; Venice Beach Eco Cottages in Venice, Calif.; Hotel Shangri-La in Santa Monica, Calif.; El Colibri Boutique Hotel in Cambria, Calif.; Hotel Encanto in Acapulco, Mexico; The Andiron in Little River, Calif.; Point-No-Point Resort on Vancouver Island in British Columbia; Petit Hotel Hafa in Sayulita, Mexico; Lakedale Resort on San Juan Island, Wash.; Pacific Edge Hotel in Laguna Beach, Calif.; Cottages at Cap Kiwanda in Pacific City, Ore.; Tu Tu’ Tun in Gold Beach, Ore.; Westport Hotel in Westport, Calif; and China Beach Retreat in Ilwaco, Wash.

Come spring 2014, The Gainsborough Bath Spa, will be the first Classic Hotel in the United Kingdom joining a list of luxury properties already owned by YTL Hotels’ glamorous portfolio. Having the exclusive privilege of being the only hotel in UK to have direct access to natural thermal waters, The Gainsborough Bath Spa is surely setting a new benchmark for luxury accommodation in the City of Bath. What is more interesting is the rich history this hotel embraces. It was originally built as the United Hospital in 1824, with designs by renowned architect John Pinch and closed in 1932. It then made way for Bath College until 2005. Consisting of three gorgeous historical buildings, each with a Grade II listed Georgian Faćade; YTL Hotels has refurbished the main wings of the Gainsborough building and constructed a new wing on Lower Borough Walls. The adjacent 17th century Bellots annexe has been redesigned, linking it to the Gainsborough with a newly formed tunnel.

The Spa Village Bath measuring 1,300 square metre and its thermal pools will be residing at the lower level of the hotel. Two floors above, it will have direct access to Bath’s celebrated waters through three therapeutic pools which are set within an atrium, flooded with natural light and specially designed with Roman history of Bath in mind. Most important of all, the highly acclaimed Spa Village brand of YTL Hotels will remain through to its philosophy of honouring wellness traditions of the locale, and interwoven with its Malaysian roots. Meanwhile, The Gainsborough Bath Spa’s elegant interiors possess the Champalimaud Design, one of the most highly regarded hotel design firms in the world, producing award- winning work on the likes of The Carlyle in New York and the Dorchester in London.

Hotel guests and residents of The Gainsborough Bath Spa will be able to savour the culinary team’s interpretation of modern English cuisine subtly fused with Asian influences. Located along Beau Street, the 99-room hotel is within walking distance with the city’s historical attractions, shopping and restaurant districts, and directly opposite the Thermae Bath Spa. Getting to London is just a 90-minute train journey away from the Bath Spa train station, which is just nearby to the Gainsborough Bath Spa Hotel.

Well, don't count on finding one in Rio de Janeiro. The party city has been named the world's most expensive destination for hotel rooms at an average of $312 per night - up three per cent since last year. That's according to the latest Hotels.com Hotel Price Index (HPI), which measures the prices guests pay for their accommodation around the world. New York was next on the list at an average of $277 per night (up 2 per cent since last year), followed by Geneva at $259 (down 3 per cent) and Honolulu at $250 a night (up 11 per cent). The average price of a hotel room around the world rose by 2 per cent during the first six months of 2013 compared with the same period the previous year.Closer to home, the most expensive hotels were found in Darwin, with an average of $196 per night, followed by Perth at $194 per night. They ranked 23rd and 24th place on the list respectively. Sydney and Canberra were both $188 per night, followed by Brisbane at $168 and Melbourne at $164. Adelaide was the cheapest, at $140.

Hotels.com spokeswoman Katherine Cole said research showed that Australians weren't put off by pricey hotels. "It's interesting to see Australians aren't shying away from travelling to the more expensive overseas destinations even with the dollar dipping more recently," she said. "This really proves Australians are avid travellers, with many ultimately prioritising experience over cost. "While many of our favourite destinations are some of the world's most expensive, there are still hundreds of holiday hot spots around the globe that currently offer incredible value for money. Travellers looking for value just need to be smart and do their research." The cheapest cities according to the study were Phnom Penh ($65 per night), Siem Reap ($66), Hanoi ($73) and Cebu, Philippines (also $73).

Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the world’s biggest sovereign wealth funds, bought Australia’s largest owner of hotels, Tourism Asset Holdings Ltd., gaining ownership of 31 properties in major cities. A subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi fund has signed a conditional contract to buy the closely held hotel owner, the Sydney-based company said in an e-mailed statement without disclosing a value. The hotels will continue to be operated by Paris-based Accor SA (AC), Tourism Asset Holdings said. Foreign investors seeking higher yields than in other markets are attracted to Australian hotel income returns, which beat the average for Australian commercial properties. South Korea’s Mirae Asset Global Investments Co. in August agreed to buy Sydney’s Four Seasons Hotel for A$340 million ($316 million). “The mood particularly from offshore purchasers is strong for hotel assets,” said Rob Cross, regional director for hotels at CBRE Group Inc. “They are seeing Australia as a very transparent and secure property market. The operational side of hotels in Australia’s corporate market is very strong.”

A unit of Abu Dhabi Investment authority is part of a consortium that in April agreed to pay A$5.07 billion to lease two Australian ports. The fund has about $627 billion of assets, according to the Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute. “We chose to run a discrete, targeted sale process and we were very pleased with the response we received,” Tourism Asset Holdings Chief Executive Office Matthew Eady said in the statement. The company started in 1993, listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1996 and was taken private in 2002.The transaction was valued at about A$800 million, the Australian newspaper and the Australian Financial Review newspapers reported today, without saying where they got the information.

Hotel sales in Australia are expected to reach about A$2 billion in 2013, surpassing the previous record set in 2007, an August report from Jones Lang LaSalle Inc.’s hotels unit said. Asian groups will continue to invest while investors from the United Arab Emirates will also become active, the broker forecast then. Australian hotels delivered an average income return of more than 8 percent as of June 30, compared with about 7 percent for retail and office properties, according to the Property Council/IPD Australia All Property Index. Capital values of hotels in Australian city centers are expected to rise 1.5 percent in the next 12 months and 2.7 percent over the next two years, a second-quarter survey of real estate professionals by National Australia Bank Ltd. showed. This will be the strongest performance of all commercial property classes in the country, according to the survey.

Cuban authorities have authorized independent farmers to sell directly to hotels and tourist-oriented restaurants. Until now, private growers have had to go through a state-run distributor to supply those businesses. State-run agribusinesses and farm co-ops are already allowed to contract directly with hotels and restaurants. It's another step in President Raul Castro's gradual economic and social changes, which began in 2010. Castro has emphasized efficiency through decentralization of the economy, which has long been dominated by the government. However he says the reforms do not amount to a wholesale embrace of capitalism. The new rules were announced Monday with their publication in the government's Official Gazette. They take effect Oct. 21.

A British amateur rugby player has plunged to his death after falling from a hotel balcony in Benidorm. Alan Clare, 34, was in the Spanish holiday resort for a stag party with friends when he tried to climb on to the balcony from an open window, it is believed. The amateur rugby player from Warrington, Cheshire, is thought to have been trying to reach his room on the fifth floor after to returning to his hotel alone and finding himself locked out. His body was found at the four-star Las Dalmatas Hotel near the resort's Levante. Known as 'Bundy' to friends, the sportsman played rugby for Bank Quay Bulls rugby league club. Friends paid tributes on Sunday in messages posted on Mr Clare's Facebook page. Pal Kelly-Ann Clarkson wrote: “You will be greatly missed by everyone who ever had the pleasure to meet you. An absolute unique guy.” Danielle Greenwood added: “So sorry to hear this devastating news. What a lovely guy! My thoughts are with your family.” Ste Arnold added: 'Shocked and gutted to hear of bundy's passin he was top bloke and it was an honour and a privelage to play alongside one of the original bank quay allstars, sad day, rest in peace bund.' (sic)  Police are not treating his death as suspicious. Falls from hotel balconies have killed four British holidaymakers on the Spanish costas and Balearic islands this summer and seriously injured another 10, the Foreign Office said.

Overall, eight British holidaymakers have died from balcony falls in Spain in the past four years. Many of the accidents result from attempts to climb between balconies, or after jumping from balconies into hotel pools. The trend, known as 'balconing', is popular among youngsters and is often fuelled by drink and drugs. All previous incidents had occurred on the party islands of Mallorca and Ibiza. Young British holidaymakers have been warned they risk costing themselves thousands of pounds or even death from the summer craze.
Despite a high-profile campaign warning of the dangers, fronted by Olympic diver Tom Daley, the issue continues to be a major headache for officials in Spain. A British embassy spokesman said: "Consular staff in Spain have this year assisted in a number of cases of very serious injuries - including some fatal - caused by falls from balconies. "Such incidents are often the result of people being under the influence of drink or drugs. "We strongly urge people to be aware of the risks and that balcony accidents do happen - with awful consequences.

"Your travel insurance may not cover the potentially very large costs that can result from a balcony fall while you're under the influence of drink or drugs."  Thomas Ousby, 19, from London, and Craig Knapp, 31, from Dundee, both fell to their deaths from balconies in Mallorca. Grant Weston, 24, from Pembroke, died after plunging 50ft from a hotel in Ibiza, and Kevin Louis, 27, was killed after falling more than 30ft from a balcony in Mallorca in 2010. Charlotte Faris, 23, Benjamin Harper, 28, and 20-year-old Adam Atkinson, all suffered similar deaths in Magaluf last year. A further 43 British nationals have suffered injuries including fractured skulls, punctured lungs and broken bones in the same period. Nikki White, a spokeswoman for the Association of British Travel Agents, said: "We are urging young holidaymakers to think about the potential risks of balconies. "We see too many people permanently injured or worse because they've tried to climb over or dive off their hotel balcony.

"We want people to enjoy their holidays but would advise them to think about the ramifications of their behaviour abroad. "Incidents such as these have devastating consequences for holidaymakers and for their families. "By working with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, tourist authorities and ABTA Members in resort we hope to help holidaymakers stop and think about how they use their balconies to prevent more of these tragic and avoidable incidents."

Attraction Hotels In Fort Lauderdale

Success in the National Football League requires drive, dedication, professionalism and special teams. You could say the same for hotels that host NFL teams when they’re on the road, which need all that and more: the right facilities, culinary skill, security, reliability and the ability to roll with the occasional oddball request. I spoke with hotels around the country which have proven they’ve got what it takes to host NFL teams year after year. Here’s what they told me matters most.For football teams, “This is a business trip, and everything done is regimented and professional,” says Jay Schumerth, general manager of the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton, Wis. Since opening in 1989, it has hosted 31 of the 32 NFL teams (exception: the home team Green Bay Packers who presumably don’t need it) and earned the NFL travel managers’ MVP (Most Valuable Property) award. Most hotels I spoke with host four to six visiting teams each year. Each visit is another chance to prove the hotel’s skills (the regular season is 13 games, plus pre- and post-season games).

What do teams value most? A trouble-free stay, “to not have any distractions and stay focused for game day,” says Luz Chatman, director of sales and marketing for the Sofitel San Francisco Bay, which hosts teams playing the San Francisco 49ers. Because any little mishap can have ripple effects, hotels account for details from airport arrival to check-in, team meetings to meals, lights-out to wake up calls. See the image below for a schedule.“This is huge,” says Steve Conklin, director of sales and marketing at the JW Marriott Chicago, and not just the quantities consumed (especially at dinner before game day).

Menus and mealtimes are a big deal, and individualized for each team. “Teams like consistency across the board,” says Whitley Donsereaux, marketing manager at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans, meaning that players are not likely to be experimenting with gumbo in the Big Easy one weekend and a clambake in Boston on another. “They like to keep the same menu in each city.” One recent change: “About two years ago,” Conklin says, “all the teams revamped their menus with more focus on nutrition. A couple of teams now have asked us to put calorie counts and how many carbs per serving on the labels on the buffet.”Given all the potential consequences when players mingle with the public, host hotels designate private floors, separate entrances, key-card-controlled elevators, even entire wings for teams, all with dedicated security staff. The Radisson Paper Valley’s Schumerth says that his hotel’s security directors are law enforcement veterans. “They can handle anything that comes their way.”

In this age of social media, it’s not just physical security that matters, but information too. The Hyatt Regency New Orleans, for example, has a zero tolerance confidentiality policy for staff. Asking for signatures, takingNot so much, actually. “The coach, general manager and owner are only the ones who receive a suite,” says Conklin, and often team staff rooms are on a different floor from players’ rooms. Otherwise, players themselves are typically put up in rooms comparable to any ordinary guest’s such as, oh, you or me. And we have it good compared to some players. “Rookies may double up,” he says.

And what about the hotel’s fancy bathrooms with large tubs or whirlpools, to soak away aches and pains? Actually, Conklin says that teams request rooms with shower stalls rather than the hotel’s more luxe bath fixtures. “Because a lot of the guys are big or may have injuries, stepping into a tub can be an issue. It’s a million dollar asset they have in a player, and teams want to keep them as safe as possible.” If players need a whirlpool or steam room, he says, there’s always the hotel fitness center and spa. pictures, posting on social media, even telling the family who’s staying at the hotel can get an employee fired. “It has to be as if the team’s not even staying here,” says Donsereaux.It would be hard to imagine, say, the American Dental Association convention running practice plays in a hotel conference room, not to mention team meetings, training exercises, stretching and massage. But often that’s just what happens when football teams come to stay. Other conference rooms are converted into temporary chapels with services led by local clergy. Some teams request multiple chapels for multiple denominations.
