The Sheraton Waikiki on Oahu, the St. Regis Princeville Resort on Kauai and the Puakea Ranch on the Big Island have been named among the “Top 20 Beach Hotels” by Sunset Magazine. Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ Sheraton Waikiki was named for being midway along the 2-mile stretch of Waikiki Beach, and for its $188 million top-to-bottom renovation that gave it a 21st-century polish, despite the 1970’s high rise architecture of the building. The article noted Waikiki is the “most forgiving place in the world to learn to surf or steer an outrigger canoe.” St. Regis Princeville Resort on Kauai, another Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ hotel, was named to the list for having the best view on the Hawaiian Islands. The article noted the hotel’s mountain-to-bay views from what it calls a private beach — although all of Hawaii’s beaches are actually public beaches — and a “jillion-dollar redo” last fall that gives the hotel a contemporary Hawaiian look. The article named Puakea Ranch’s four private bungalows on the Big Island to the list as a tropical estate and an anti-resort. It called the property refreshingly rustic, noting guests can collect eggs to cook with from a chicken coop and ride one of the ranch’s horses for a view of the Kohala Coast.

Other hotels on the list are: La Jolla Shores Hotel in La Jolla, Calif.; Ocean Park Motel in San Francisco, Calif.; Hotel La Casa del Camino in Laguna Beach, Calif.; Venice Beach Eco Cottages in Venice, Calif.; Hotel Shangri-La in Santa Monica, Calif.; El Colibri Boutique Hotel in Cambria, Calif.; Hotel Encanto in Acapulco, Mexico; The Andiron in Little River, Calif.; Point-No-Point Resort on Vancouver Island in British Columbia; Petit Hotel Hafa in Sayulita, Mexico; Lakedale Resort on San Juan Island, Wash.; Pacific Edge Hotel in Laguna Beach, Calif.; Cottages at Cap Kiwanda in Pacific City, Ore.; Tu Tu’ Tun in Gold Beach, Ore.; Westport Hotel in Westport, Calif; and China Beach Retreat in Ilwaco, Wash.
